For decades, the diet wars have pitted advocates for the low-carb, high-fat paleo diet against advocates of the exclusively plant-based vegan diet and dozens of other diets leaving most of us bewildered and confused. The Pegan Diet 21 Practical Principles for Reclaiming Your Health PDF

For those of us on the sidelines, trying to figure out which approach is best has been nearly impossible – both extreme diets have unique benefits and drawbacks. But how can it be, we’ve asked desperately, that our only options are bacon and butter three times a day or endless kale salads? How do we eat to reverse disease, optimal health, longevity and performance. How do we eat to reverse climate change? There must be a better way!

Fortunately, there is. With The Pegan Diet, a food is medicine approach, Mark Hyman explains how to take the best aspects of the paleo diet (good fats, limited refined carbs, limited sugar) and combine them with the vegan diet (lots and lots of fresh, healthy veggies) to create a delicious diet that is not only good for your brain and your body, but also good for the planet.

Featuring 30 recipes, and plenty of infographics illustrating the concepts, The Pegan Diet offers a balanced and easy-to-follow approach to eating that will help you get, and stay, fit, healthy, focused, and happy – for life.

‘Now, more than ever, we need to utilize the power of food to help our society overcome the epidemic of chronic disease. The Pegan Diet offers an easy-to-implement solution for anyone to get started on their health journey using 21 basic principles that show how we can use food as medicine.’ Arianna Huffington, Founder & CEO, Thrive Global

As a vegetarian, I agree that we make a difference when we find common ground.

I do not think Dr Hyman is disrespecting Vegans or Vegetarians. To be clear, Dr. Hyman is adamantly opposed to factory farming. And yes, he champions something called regenerative farming which is based on humane animal involvement in ethical farming models..grazing, fertilizer etc. He presents this with research to back up the fact that they are crucial to sustainable agriculture and highlights that all of the fake meat products are much worse for the environment and we still have no idea the impact they will have on our bodies. And yes, he tolerates a small amount of meat in a diet that is mostly plant based – but advocates that everyone should do what is right for them. Not my thing and that’s OK – but there are those who will never be vegetarian but could adopt these changes and that is a starting point that I can embrace for animals and the environment.

That is just one part of a book that goes out of its way to show both paleo and vegan/vegetarians that we have more in common than we realize because we are fighting all the time. If that inspires outrage, then the Monsanto’s of the world win and I’m not sure how we change things. If the goal is to save the environment/animals, bring about food equality and transform the standard American diet, I am all for teaming up with my Paleo friends and letting research guide the way – let’s end factory farming together.

Soul Searching for a New Me

February 23, 2021

If you are looking for a diet book, look elsewhere. Mark Hyman offers a common sense, well researched, and not afraid to call it like it is approach to eating. I first ran into his work about 3-4 years ago after receiving abnormal lab reports…my liver enzymes were out of whack and I was so tired that I needed five 8 oz cups of morning coffee just to function each day. In my mid-50s at the time, I was mentally and physically exhausted and ready to call it a day by 3:00 p.m. I was not overweight and followed religiously what I thought was a great diet based on medically sound books from the 1990s which I discovered were now sorely outdated. An alternative medicine doc locally told to me get off of wheat and that was Step 1 in the right direction. Within 48 hours of doing so, I didn’t even need coffee to get going, but I was still wiped out and doing some serious soul searching for a new me. A couple of days later, my wife and I were panning through new books at Costco. She pointed to books that she thought I might enjoy reading. I bought both of them. One of them was Food: What The Heck Should I Eat? (Hyman, 2018). That book grossly altered the way that we now think about food. (Dale Bredesen’s The End of Alzheimer’s was the other book…another excellent, different sort of read.)

The Pegan Diet is a continuation of Food: What The Heck Should I Eat? – more common sense, more updates. I highly recommend both books. Three years or so after first adopting Hyman’s “farmacy” and “food is medicine” philosophy, my only wish is that we had more medical practitioners just like him. Dr. Hyman is bold, unapologetic, and very practical in what he writes. I have since read and incorporated several of his works into my daily routine. Although I continue to age, I now feel at least 20 years younger. My brain is sharp, I have amazing energy, and I no longer crash in the middle of the day. I cannot say enough!
