“Balaji is a visionary, and one of the most original thinkers of our time. Many have had the experience of hearing him say something, thinking it was crazy, and then a year or two later realizing ‘Balaji was right.’ I think Balaji will be right about The Network State.” — Brian Armstrong, cofounder and CEO of Coinbase

When the brand new is unthinkable, we fight over the old. That’s where we are today with governments, with politics, and with much of the physical world. But perhaps we can change that.

This book introduces the concept of the network state: a country you can start from your computer, a state that recruits like a startup, a nation built from the internet rather than disrupted by it.

The fundamental concept behind the network state is to assemble a digital community and organize it to crowdfund physical territory. But that territory is not in one place — it’s spread around the world, fully decentralized, hooked together by the internet for a common cause, much like Google’s offices or Bitcoin’s miners. And because every citizen has opted in, it’s a model for 100% democracy rather than the minimum threshold of consent modeled by 51% democracies.

Of course, there are countless questions that need to be answered to build something of this scope. H

 “Genius Can Be Nurtured”

January 30, 2008

“Sparks of Genius: The 13 Thinking Tools of the World’s Most Creative People”, by Robert & Michele Root-Bernstein. Mariner Books, MA 1999. International Standard Book Number 0-618-12745-3 Pbk. 327/401 pages that includes 13 pgs. notes; 20 pgs. Bibliog.; 8 pgs. Misc.; and 22 pgs. index plus a few B & W photos & Illus. 9″ x 6″.

An intriguing assemblage of anecdotal stories about important and/or distinguished, talented scholars, scientists, teachers, inventors, and divers artists (dance, music, creative arts) that explore the subject of creativity: – & written by a pair of dedicated writers with notable published works along similar substance.

An alternative title could be “Creative Thinking” – this book explores the intrinsic substantive milieu out of which may arise sparks of genius, the “eureka”, the intuitive ratiocination or day-dreaming flash of insight giving rise to novel, potent revelations about Man’s ostensibly unlimited potential for imagination of previously hidden `secrets’ or understandings — ranging from mathematical, artistic, or mechanical concepts or models, etc. Underlying tools are diverse, but include observing, imaging, abstracting, pattern formation & recognition, analogizing, empathizing, dimensional and body thinking, play, modeling, transforming, and synthesizing.

At best, these thinking tools as expounded by the authors are best wonted or encouraged at early ages when exploration, creativity, play and toys are encountered in the nurturing process — thusly parents, mentors and teaching institutions are administrators of this important charge. The thrust is not so much toward “knowing” as it is toward “understanding

Simply a Great Book on Creativity Toolsets and Skills

July 21, 2010

I wouldn’t call myself a genius as in some sort of demigod. However, I’m a architect, artist and computer programmer and as such I do think that I create, that I’m a creative person. Now, I read a lot of books such as this to see how folks think creative people think and for tools I can use to teach young designers how to think and be creative. After all, the most basic definition of a creative person is someone who creates. You have to create to be creative. To create is the action and creativity is the skill you bring to the table. Create more and you become more creative.

When I first read the table of contents for this book I was quite excited. It was the first time in all the books I have read where I saw the tools I and others actually use in the act of creating objects (and of course ideas, but for me it is mostly objects). All I could think of is, “This is cool. These people have boiled it down to essence.” I don’t necessarily think this book will make anyone a genius, but it sure will go a long way in providing a set of thirteen basic tools for the act of creating. The thirteen are described quite well with interesting examples of each. Apply them as you create and you can’t help but improve your creativity skill
