Features of The Explosive Child PDF

The Explosive Child PDF-Dr. Ross Greene, a distinguished clinician and pioneer in the treatment of kids with social, emotional, and behavioral challenges, has worked with thousands of explosive children, and he has good news: these kids aren’t attentionseeking, manipulative, or unmotivated, and their parents aren’t passive, permissive disciplinarians. Rather, explosive kids are lacking some crucial skills in the domains of flexibility/adaptability, frustration tolerance, and problem solving, and they require a different approach to parenting.

The Explosive Child is the highly acclaimed, lifechanging parenting guide in which Dr. Greene first delineated the Collaborative Problem Solving approach.  Dr. Greene explains why kids exhibit challenging behaviors, why traditional behavior management strategies may not be effective for many kids, and how to use Plan B to solve problems collaboratively and teach your child the skills he or she is lacking.

As the model has evolved over the years, so has The Explosive Child, and it is available here in an abridged and updated fourth edition narrated by Dr. Greene.

Throughout this compassionate, insightful, and practical book, Dr. Greene provides a new conceptual framework for understanding their difficulties.  He explains why traditional parenting and treatment often don’t work with these children, and he describes what to do instead. Instead of relying on rewarding and punishing, Dr. Greene’s Collaborative Problem Solving model promotes working with explosive children to solve the problems that precipitate explosive episodes, and teaching these kids the skills they lack.

The Authors

The Explosive Child PDF

Dr. Ross Greene is the New York Times bestselling author of the influential books The Explosive Child, Lost at School, Raising Human Beings, and Lost & Found. He is the originator of the innovative, evidence-based treatment approach called Collaborative & Proactive Solutions (CPS) described in these books. The CPS model provides a compassionate, accurate understanding of behavioral challenges and a non-punitive, non-adversarial approach for reducing challenging episodes, solving problems, teaching skills, improving communication, and repairing relationships. Dr. Greene also developed and executive produced the award-winning feature-length documentary The Kids We Lose, a film about the counterproductive, often inhumane ways in which kids with behavioral challenges are treated — treatment that often pushes them into the pipeline to prison — and the difficulties and frustrations often faced by their parents, educators, and other caregivers (learn more at www.thekidswelose.com).

Dr. Greene was on the faculty at Harvard Medical School for over 20 years, and is now founding director of the non-profit Lives in the Balance (www.livesinthebalance.org), which provides free, web-based resources on the CPS approach and advocates on behalf of kids with social, emotional, and behavioral challenges and their caregivers. He is also adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at Virginia Tech and adjunct Professor in the Faculty of Science at the University of Technology in Sydney, Australia. The many research papers documenting the effectiveness of the CPS model can also be found on the Lives in the Balance website. Dr. Greene and his colleagues consult extensively to families, schools, inpatient psychiatry units, and residential and juvenile detention facilities, and lecture widely throughout the world (visit www.cpsconnection.com for a complete listing of learning and training options). He has been featured in a wide range of media, including The Oprah Show, Good Morning America, The Morning Show, National Public Radio, The Atlantic, The Washington Post, and Mother Jones magazine. He lives in Portland, Maine.

Love the lamp “This book is just what we needed! Described our son to a tee, and then presented an unorthodox method of dealing with him, and teaching him how to deal with his low frustration tolerance. The book presents a way of dealing with an explosive child that is counter-intuitive. Don’t miss a valuable opportunity for your explosive child to grow and develop tolerance, just because the method presented is counter intuitive. If nothing you’ve tried works, this is what you need. It works wonders!

The book’s major theme is that all children want to do/be good, and if they are not behaving as they are expected to, and are not responding to consequences, then they are not capable of behaving in the desired way – they must learn how, and in order for them to learn how, you must follow the process in the book. If you follow this process, and set aside your own pre-conceived notions about your child, then your child will learn how to do what you want them to. Following the book requires that you set aside your own beliefs that if only you discipline the child enough, or are harsh enough, then they will conform. For an explosive child, harsh discipline tends to just stroke the parent’s ego, rather than accomplish the goal of teaching the child not to explode. You have to take a different approach to meet your goal.”

Brenda Elzin “I have a small library’s worth of books to educate me for parenting a child who is sweet, smart and tries so hard but who has difficulty expressing an appropriate level of emotion for a frustrating situation. My child is now eight years old and with the information in this book, we are seeing remarkable changes in behavior because our PARENTING is changing for the better. This books has real-life practical advice, methodologies and exercises to help parents understand and help their children succeed. Whether your child cries a lot at frustrating situations and has extreme difficulty fostering friendships, or your child is at the other end of the spectrum and is literally explosive with tantrums and the like, this book has what parents need. I highly recommend it.”

Hope “This is the book for parents who have children with over the top, explosive behaviors. When traditional discipline does not work and you have tried everything… (I’ve even had an evaluation, therapy and been told I’m doing everything right!) Well, my doing everything right still wasn’t enough. Friends insinuate it’s my parenting skills that lack, however, this book taught me differently. I learned that it isn’t about dealing with the behaviors as one might for typical children – it’s about TEACHING SKILLS that the child is lacking and is delayed in (even though no evaluations demonstrated a delay, it is so clear to me now what my child needs).

Such a great book and it saved my sanity – really. I’ve pushed for her educators to read it as well.”

mom in davis “My favorite part of reading the book was that it felt like I was “talking” with someone who understood what was going on with my child. This is the first book I have read on the subject despite having a school-aged explosive child. It was recommended by his school counselor, who I had approached to discuss anxiety issues he was having.

The book first discusses why children explode and what sorts of things can trigger the explosions, and eventually moves on to how you can work with your child, being his/her “surrogate frontal lobe” and in the process helping him/her learn to use that frontal lobe. The techniques seemed pretty obvious and not too different from what I’ve tried at times, but I’ve tried a lot of things and this book gave me the motivation to focus on this technique. While the technique seemed obvious and straightforward, it’s much harder to put into practice than I’d like, but that’s not the author’s fault (there are lots of suggestions for overcoming common obstacles).

It is true that the book is repetitive, but given that I’ve already started to forget some of the things I read in it, maybe repetition is a good thing so that you can remember the parts that you need to implement.”
