DOW “This book is awesome!! I first discovered it in a local tapas bar that had a converted basement into a speak easy type cocktail bar.

I managed to then find it on here. Don’t jsut think the basic cocktails you’ve all heard of, this has them obviously, but it has all those other weird and wonderful ones as well. From a properly made Boston sour (egg White and all) to drinks I had never heard of.

This is the ultimate Bible for cocktail lovers. My girlfriend and I have been through about 15 different cocktails so far and only ticked off 1/3 of the ones we want to (and there are plenty we didn’t add to our list as well so there are truly loads in here).

The negative reviews on here blow mind… if you want the same basic 12 cocktails you would find at a weatherspoons or Green King, this isn’t the book for you, it has so much more. People are complaining about the measurements… it doesn’t give you set measurements, it’ll say something like 1 measure of vodka…so that 1 measure could be 25ml or 50ml or what ever you want, 2 measures would be double the 1 measure, not rocket science….. if you read the book properly you will find what you want… in this book a whiskey sour doesn’t have an egg white, but they also list a Boston sour, exactly the same as a whiskey sour but with the egg white….

If you get one cocktail book, get this one, I promise you won’t need another one, ever!”

Vivienne F. “This was my covid ‘project’ to work my way through this book, to give myself an education on what exactly goes into cocktails so I wouldn’t feel like a moron next time I went to a bar. From that standpoint, the book provided me with that education… But… I feel the editing could have used some work. For example, in the back section on ‘Bubbly’ a whole bunch of mocktail recipes snuck in despite there being a whole section dedicated to mocktails at the end (46 recipes to be exact.) A shopping list at the end of each section would have been highly invaluable to know if I wanted to dive into that section or not. That would have informed whether or not I took a gander into that area of drinks. As I went along in this book I started to get really, really irritated that it was asking me to get yet *another* unusual liqueur just for one drink. This trend began to annoy me so much that I created a master shopping list to try and minimize the purchases and even tried to split some of the alcohol costs with a friend that also likes playing around with this, and even so… I still spent a small fortune (probably $1000 at least, I stopped tracking and gave up and just went with it.) So from a practical standpoint, this is not such a great book. Did I learn something? Yes. Did I have fun with it? Sometimes- see the above on costs… Oh and one more thing, I don’t know if it is standard bar tending proportions but almost every recipe calls for 3/4 measurements. I don’t know why when most jiggers are sold at 1 oz on one side and 1/2 oz on the other side. Why the unusual proportions? So I edited the heck out the the book and converted everything to 1.5 oz, and .5 oz measurements. Again- who edited this? Your audience is the home bar tender not the professional So yes, I ended up with 47 favorites drinks out of 205 that I tried- so that’s 23% of all the drinks I liked (but maybe it was my tastes that informed the choices, not the recipes themselves) which I guess is a win for a covid project. But I have to say having to buy all these unusual ingredients that I wasn’t sure if I’d ever use again, was really really irritating. Please come out with new and improved version 2.0 with shopping lists at the end of each chapter.”
D . W. “Bought as a father’s day gift, for father and son to learn some cocktails together with the help of pictures. Now, we have other cocktail books, namely Diffords (which is encyclopaedic and a great source, but a little intimidating), and my OH knows a fair amount about cocktail making. However, as noted in the reviews, there are basic recipes (ie., classic cocktails) that just don’t appear here and a few that are odd or need a footnote — a whiskey sour recipe probably should have egg whites mentioned as an option. A negroni with sparkling wine in it. And the index isn’t great — you’d think looking up negroni would point one to a negroni recipe, but no, it’s under ‘Broken Negroni’. It took us another 24 hours to find it in the sparkling section (rather than ‘gin’ or ‘aperitif’ or even ‘digestif’). The book says ‘classic cocktails’ across the bottom, and it has a few. And a ‘Broken Negroni’ might be great, but we’ve found the book disappointing overall.”
