Wow Nola is GOOD!

Maddox’s story will gut you from the inside out. It’s Heartbreaking, an eye opener and raw.

The mind is a fragile thing.

I just knew Maddox’s story would be good but I had know idea just how so….
From birth he hasn’t had the easiest life, throw in some life altering trauma it’s never good.

Nola writes so freaking well. I was gripped to my seat It literally blew me away. From previous books and reading about Maddox in them he felt so mysterious at times.

The ending was whoa!!

I absolutely cannot wait to read part 2 of Maddox’s story.

This story is one that’s hard to read but please take any of Nola’s warnings seriously.

Ends in a cliffhanger but it’s a compelling story!

Wow, what a story. At times I had trouble following the storyline but it’s probably because Maddox is dealing with mental health issues so it conveys in a discombobulated way. I did enjoy the story, though. His struggles were heart wrenching. I thought this was a stand alone, as it says in the description but it isn’t. It’s a pretty heart stopping cliffhanger. I hate that I have to wait until Jan of 2023 to find out what happens! I was sent a complimentary copy and I am choosing to leave my honest review.

THE BOOK BEGINS FROM WHERE SEBASTIAN BASICALLY KIDNAPS MADDOX AND TAKES HIM BACK TO HIS HOUSE TO DETOX AFTER OVERDOSING. THIS IS WHERE HE MEETS QUINN, AS SHE HERSELF IS TRYING TO HEAL FROM HER FAILED MARRIAGE.
THIS STORY DOES A DEEP DIVE INTO MADDOX’S DRUG ABUSE AND MENTAL STATUS. IT’S WRITTEN FROM HIS POV WHERE YOU ARE TAKEN THROUGH HIS PAST & PRESENT THOUGHTS. THERE IS SO MUCH TO SAY ABOUT THIS BOOK, BUT HONESTLY I DON’T WANT TO GIVE OUT ANY SPOILERS. I WILL TELL YOU THAT IT’S A ROLLERCOASTER OF EMOTIONS TO SEE ALL THAT HE HAS GONE THROUGH. IT’S SO BEAUTIFULLY WRITTEN AND CAPTURES HOW DEEPLY HE LOVES BUT NEVER FEELING HE IS WORTHY OR GOOD ENOUGH.

Maddox. How my heart aches for broken Maddox. This book is an emotional rollercoaster. Before we dive into this, I need to make it know that this book hits a lot of triggers. This was not a book that I could read quickly, I am glad that I knew about the triggers before reading this. Please read the trigger warnings prior to reading this book.

Shed My Skin by Nola Marie is book five in the Sons of Sin series, but Book 1 of the Maddox Masters story. This story follows Maddox, a man who has been struggling with demons and is at the point of exhaustion. We knew his story wasn’t going to be sunshine and rainbows. Dark. Painful. Sad. Tragic. Maddox is just full of pain.

It is well known that Maddox has struggles with drugs, alcohol, and sex. We go on a journey through Maddox’s issues of his past, an in depth looks into his tortured mind, and a deep dive into his dark, broken soul. After struggling so long, Maddox has had enough. He was clearly telling everyone that he was done, saying his goodbyes to all those that had an effect on his life. Then he meets Quinn, and his entire world just stops.

Maddox’s road has never been easy. His story is told via flashbacks from the man himself, with parts of the present thrown in. I was really impressed with how the story was written. Nola does such a wonderful job with this topic. Even though it is a dark and tragic story. I am truly impressed with how Nola portrays this sensitive, broken man.

This book is part 1 of Maddox’s story in the Sons of Sin series.

In a word, Shed My Skin is epic! Unlike the dual POVs in the other books, book one is told entirely from Maddox’s viewpoint. And really, it had to be. For those who have read Nola Marie, it became clear a whole back that Maddox is the heart and soul of SoS. He’s been building even through the Men of River City books. His story was never going to be your typical romance. Or easy.

After all, he’s Maddox Masters.

It’s been clear since the beginning that Maddox has issues with drugs, alcohol, and sex. But Shed My Skin takes us on a journey through the why’s. The turmoil and pain of Maddox’s past, the inner workings of a brilliant and tortured mind, and into the depths of a beautiful, broken soul.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a Nola Marie book without spice. And Maddox’s clear path becomes hazy when he meets his whiskey eyes and lullabies. Quinn throws everything he believes he knows about himself off kilter. Recognizing her pain, Maddox does as he always has and tries to help her.

But what starts as Maddox’s mission to save just one more soul before his battles end turns into something more. Something real. Something dangerous.

The beauty and depth of this book took my breath away. Delving into Maddox’s mind broke my heart. This sweet, broken, tortured boy’s story sank deep into my own soul. This book is NOT your typical rockstar romance. It’s not even one of those VH1 Behind the Music specials. This book is Maddox Masters, as simple, complex, and real as that.

I really can’t wait for book 2.

Waited a very long time for Maddox’ story. And it was brutal. Devastating. Blindingly sad.
What that boy, and man endured. It’s a wonder he’s lasted 29 years.
This ends on a terribly harsh cliffhanger.
I want his HEA, if one is to be found.
