Advice from a gynecol-obs surgeon

This book relates in a very clear way surgical anatomy and more than essential surgical techniques. The gynecological part is too short, and probably related to the subspecialization in this field in the USA. As we say textbooks and drawings never lie in surgery, this is confirmed here. There are many related chapters accessible on line for buyers of the original version. It’s a good value for money, even in Euros at the present time.

It is a true shame that I have to give this book 2 stars. The writing is fabulous and the diagrams are great. The explanations for the surgical indications and the procedures are also wonderful….extremely useful. Nevertheless, as mentioned in a previous review, many chapters of common procedures for a general surgery resident (i.e. parotidectomy) are e-chapters. The Echapters would be fine and useful if I could download a pdf version to read on my iPad. However, they are only viewable in the LWW proprietary flash viewer which is buggy, not useable on my iPad, and is only accessible until this version is updated which means eventually you will lose access to much of the chapters of the book. A much smarter idea for LWW would have been to include an Inkling ebook version of this with purchase of hardcopy so that you could lighten your load while allowing the chapters to be easily accessible. Truly a lost opportunity.
Regardless, even though the content included is great this is low value for the fact that you will have a hard time getting to some chapters. Steer clear of this book and find another descriptive operative technique book. Consider Operative techniques in Surgery by Mulholland, its excellent includes a useable and awesome ebook version with print, and you won’t get screwed out of chapters

This is a fantastic book, hands down… but totally unacceptable “web only chapters” and no support to use the web features on the iPad.
Lets get frank – this book is awesome for a surgery resident. Great photos, great descriptions – can always easily find the “know thing” things as a review for a case or even between cases. This edition continues the old books tradition and adds more content… good content… with a catch
The catches:
1) Continues the inability to use the LWW website on the iphone/ipad and read the book on the iPad
2) 32 (YES 32 of the 134 chapters – almost 25% of the book) are “web only chapters”. These are PDF’s you can view by clicking on the chapter link in the ebook. The whole purpose of getting the book was to have it in paper to bring around without having to have other access. I am a very techy person and would prefer to view the whole book on the iPad and computer but accept a book as well. Now I cannot have either as a single but need to have both to read the whole book.
I don’t think it’s very acceptable to print a book and sell it and make 25% of the content online only without providing easy access to read the entire book online in a digital format that is commonly used. The ideal book is able to be read on the iPad/iOS (the most commonly used device by medical professionals) and LWW has still yet to provide this.
Disappointed with this version but LWW could easily turn this around and make it one of the best surgery resources!
Update 11/4/2014:
Tried to access one of the “eChapters” and the links now do not work, so you lose all access to those chapters!
