We owe a great debt to Jean Baptiste Marc Bourgery (1797-1849) for his Atlas of Anatomy, which was not only a massive event in medical history, but also remains one of the most comprehensive and beautifully illustrated anatomical treatises ever published in any language. In 1830, having received his doctorate in medicine three years prior, Bourgery began work on his magnificent atlas in cooperation with illustrator Nicolas Henri Jacob (1782-1871). The first volumes were published the following year, but completion of the treatise required nearly two decades of dedication. The four parts of Bourgery’s treatise cover descriptive anatomy, surgical anatomy and techniques, general anatomy and embryology, and microscopic anatomy. Jacob’s spectacular hand-colored, life-size lithographs are remarkable for their clarity, color, and aesthetic appeal, reflecting a combination of direct laboratory observation and illustrative research.Atlas of Human Anatomy and Surgery 25th Edition PDF

Art and medicine in perfect harmony
January 3, 2011

This book was a gift for a medical student who also happens to be very fond of art and when I saw it for the first time in a friend’s house I was convinced this was the perfect gift for him.

The book features big colored detailed views of practically every inch of the human body inside and outside, an exhaustive edition work with the best quality a book can hold, everyone should get a hold of this book at least once because is a perfect match between science and art.

Truly gorgeous book

As an art student and a person who is generally fascinated by the human body, this enormous, beautiful book of litho prints is incredible to look through. It may not be the most informative book for a medical practitioner or student, but the history and craftsmanship of the images is just amazing. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in the human body or someone interested in lithography or anyone who might need some creative inspiration.

BEWARE! There are two different editions with a similar title!

When looking at the reviews and deciding if you want this book, bear in mind that the huge, linen-bound 2005 edition is probably the one everyone is raving about. It is out of print and goes for about $300 these days. The currently available 25th Anniversary “Special Edition” from 2008 is considerably shorter and more affordably produced, but it will not have quite the same impact or collector value. Just watch those pub. dates and price ranges, folks!

Empfehleswert!

Anatomical clarification

This book allowed for a different visual perspective of anatomical information. The artistic renditions found here brought out aspects of the human body that has not been present in other anatomical textbooks. For the visual learner, this atlas will allow a further comprehension of the human body. It is a great compliment to written anatomical textbooks for students in the medical fields or for those with a general interest in anatomy.

Bought this book as a Christmas present for my wife (she’s into medical things) not knowing fully what it would contain – wished I had – she wasn’t that impressed! But a beautifully illustrated book and HEAVY!
