Gas Master
Beware – No eBook Included in This Edition
August 15, 2018

I’m very disappointed in this edition of Morgan and Mikhail. In this day and age, where almost everyone has access to a smart phone and/or tablet of some kind, how does any text not come with free access to the eBook? Given that purchase of the previous edition did come with free downloadable eBook access on Inkling (and online access at Inkling.com), I wrongly assumed that this edition would also come with free downloadable eBook access in some format. As an anesthesiology resident, it’s essential to have access to the eBook. Many residents use the eBook in the OR and inside the hospital, while using the hard copy of the textbook at home. Imagine my disappointment when I opened the front cover and didn’t see a scratch-off access code, but instead an advertisement for McGraw Hill’s ‘Access Anesthesiology’. The eBook should be accessible without internet access and should also come without having to pay for an additional copy of the eBook on its own (or a paid subscription to Access Anesthesiology). Again, very disappointed with the editors and the update for this reason, otherwise still a great text of anesthesia.

Not just rehashing the old edition
August 23, 2018

Let me start by saying that I have read the 5th edition (green cover) cover-to-cover probably 5 times, and individual chapters countless times. I purchased this book too stay current with what new providers were reading.

It is evident that the changes in this book were made to address frequent weaknesses of those taking Anesthesia Basic exams, AKTs, and ITEs. I was going to wait until I read the whole book to make a well written review, but it seems unneeded. I am absolutely impressed with the changes they made in explaining some of the sticking points of anesthesia, such as Mapleson circuits or SEPs/MEPs. This is not simply rehashing the old book, but it seems a deliberate and thoughtful review of the weaknesses of the previous edition was put forth.

I feel this book is a positive addition to those with the older edition. I will certainly update my review for the last half of the book if it changes (I am doubtful of that). I know other texts are harped upon as sources Barrash, Miller’s), but I find no other book as concise and to the point for what one needs from medical school through most of residency.

Happy learning

Content is renowned for being good but the book itself seems cheaply made
August 16, 2018

Just recieved the latest edition after it was lost in the mail (USPS did that not online store). Everyone knows this is one of the primers on the subject and that’s not disputed however the book itself is cheaply made. Opened for the first time just now to reseach a presentation on circuit systems and the first page literally just fell out. Looking at the spine and the degree to which the binding is fastened, I have no clue how this thing will hold up for any extent of time

Excellent source for review of modern anaesthesia practice
February 8, 2020

To me, this book represents a very good overview of contemporary anaesthesia practice.

The book is an excellent source for ‘review’, although I think other well known anaesthsiology textbooks discuss individual topics in more detail.

For this book, the authors integrates a variety of basic science, general medicine and surgical concepts into relevant anaesthesia knowledge. I think this book is best for reading cover-to-cover and then using additional supplementary sources to dive into certain topics more deeply, where required. I loved the practical advise offered in the book and how certain concepts were discussed in practical ‘case reports’ at the end of certain chapters.

I read the kindle book on iPad and Mac and it seems to work well. Diagrams and figures are easy to zoom into on the kindle apps.

Highly recommended for its concise nature.

First chapter pages still attached to each other and not cut correctly
January 31, 2019

This review is based on the physical appearance of the book, I’ll review the content after reading through more of it at a later date.
1. My original order did not arrive despite being marked as delivered but customer service got me a replacement
2. The spine of the book came with some very minor scuffing (bought it new) but I wasn’t too concerned
3. When I went to open the book I noticed the glue binding the spine to the first few pages was very visible and a small part of the first page itself was glued to the front cover
4. The top pages of the first 18 pages are still stuck together and are significantly shorter than the rest of the pages in the book. So far it doesn’t look like any of the actual content in the book was cut out but it’s not very aesthetically pleasing.
After paying $100 for a brand new edition of this book, I expected more. That being said none of my pages were loosely attached or have fallen off (at least in the first few hours of owning this book).
Please see my pictures for a more accurate representation and I’ll update this review as needed in the future.

Satisfied, good material, great resource!
June 22, 2019

Pros:

I was skeptical because of the bad reviews given on the construction and materials of the book, but It hasn’t fell apart; until now, it looks very good to me… page material is good, not as glossy as other major texbooks (like Braunwald’s Textbook of Cardiology which i can compare to)….i would say the material it is the same as Kaplan’s USMLE Lecture Notes books.

Overall, great resource, simple writing directly to the point makes it easy to read, nice pictures. Satisfied with the purchase.

Cons:

No ebook nor any kind of supplementary material included is a major drawback nowadays, access anesthesiology is basically a website were they sell all the supplementary material of similar books published by the editorial that otherwise should be included with the purchase of the book, at least like the majority of other books.

i.e Braunwald’s11th ed has inkling and continuous updates to the book included.

Anesthesia book

First purchase, front soft cover had a huge dent and couple of pages were folded. The book looked that was it was read already. No cover on the book to preserve it. Potential waster spillage on the first few pages too. Ordered an exchange and the exchange had a minor dent on the top of the soft cover. Still no plastic cover.
