Badly written, thoroughly mundane.

In “Or Else,” novelist Andy Drake has returned home to take care of his aging father and entered into a secret affair with a married woman he’s known since childhood. Now, someone has discovered that affair and, in a note left on Andy’s doorstep, is demanding that it stop. Who is it? The woman’s husband? A member of Andy’s family? A neighbor in this small community in upstate New York?
Unfortunately, I’m some fifty pages into this novel that’s supposed to be “A Thriller,” and absolutely could care less. The characters are not the least bit compelling. The plot is mundane. The dialogue is uninspired. The Adirondack Mountain setting is barely utilized. And the writing vacillates between mediocre and just plain bad. Filled with cliches, grammatical errors, and awkward, clunky sentences that sometimes make little sense, “Or Else” is a real chore to read.

Worst first pick ever. Aside from the obvious church hating yet Bible thumping narrative, this novel is so badly written that I admit to skimming at least 100 pages. The narrator, Andy who is a mystery writer is intent on finding his missing mistress and her two kids after her husband is found murdered. The story just unravels from there, makes no sense. Would love to give me a refund, but it was a free pick. Wasted.
~~Twists and Turns Abound~~

For me, this was a well written novel that had multiple twists and turns within the pages. Nothing like an environment that was peaceful turning into one of chaos. Just imagine returning home to care for your dad and discovering that your ‘love’ of years ago is unhappily married. This is the situation that Andy must confront head on.
The author has done an admirable task in bringing the past to life. Rachel is married to David and this sets the scene for the first of many twists.. Oh my, secrets start to surface along with an anonymous note written in threatening language.
Personally, I found this to be so reminiscent of real life scenarios that it gripped my attention from the beginning. Toss in the added mystery of a character being shot and that adds another level of mystery to this one.
Characters were well developed, solid plot and well written.

A thriller with some odd narrative choices, TW: child abuse

The book has 32 main chapters, and about 235 pages, not including the Resources and Acknowledgments sections.
The story is told from the perspective of Andy Drake, a struggling writer who has started a romantic relationship with a married woman named Rachel. Andy’s life is already challenging; as he is trying to take care of his father who is starting to lose his memory, and then Andy receives an anonymous note telling him to stay away from Rachel. As he desperately tries to figure out who sent the threatening note, everything goes haywire. Rachel’s husband is suddenly killed and Rachel and her sons go missing, leaving Andy to try to figure out what exactly happened…
Parts of the book have a somewhat unusual narrative style, with sections that are actually written in the second-person. Several chapters start like this, before shifting back to a more traditional first-person narrative. For example: “You pace around the house you grew up in. You do this because you have no other place to go. Not anywhere that’s better. Nowhere the air won’t seem thick and cloistering with your guilt.”
Personally, I wasn’t the biggest fan of this style. The second-person to first-person shifts seemed odd and unnecessary at times; and for me it was a bit distracting. Some of the dialogue also seemed unnatural, and I never really connected with Andy the main character.Or Else A Thriller PDF
Also, there are some unsettling events in the book that might be triggering for some people; including child abuse; so be warned if that is a problem for you.
Overall, this wasn’t exactly my cup of tea. Something about the writing style seemed very bland, and it was hard for me to get really invested in the story. The second-person parts seemed a bit forced, and to me it didn’t really make Andy any more compelling of a character. The complete plot was decent, and pacing was fine; but I also found parts of the story to be pretty disturbing, and not because of the murders. I didn’t find the ending to be particularly satisfying either, although I see what the author was trying to do there. For me, this was maybe a 2.5 / 5.
