Attributes of Nature’s Palette PDF

A gorgeous expanded edition of Werner’s Nomenclature of Colours, a landmark reference book on color and its origins in nature. Nature’s Palette PDF

First published in 1814, Werner’s Nomenclature of Colours is a taxonomically organized guide to color in the natural world. Compiled by German geologist Abraham Gottlob Werner, the book was expanded and enhanced in 1821 by Patrick Syme, who added color swatches and further color descriptions, bringing the total number of classified hues to 110. The resulting resource has been invaluable not only to artists and designers but also to zoologists, botanists, mineralogists, anatomists, and explorers, including Charles Darwin on the famous voyage of the Beagle.

Nature’s Palette makes this remarkable volume available to today’s readers, and is now fully enhanced with new illustrations of all the animals, plants, and minerals Werner referenced alongside each color swatch. Readers can see “tile red” in a piece of porcelain jasper, the breast of a cock bullfinch, or a Shrubby Pimpernel. They can admire “Berlin blue” on a piece of sapphire, the Hepatica flower, or the wing feathers of a jay. Interspersed throughout the book are lavish feature pages displaying cases of taxidermy, eggs, shells, feathers, minerals, and butterflies, with individual specimens cross-referenced to the core catalog.

Featuring contributions by leading natural history experts along with more than 1,000 color illustrations and eight gatefolds, Nature’s Palette is the ideal illustrated reference volume for visual artists, naturalists, and anyone who is captivated by color.

COLOR + Nature = a “Cabinet” for the curious artist!
June 11, 2021

When I viewed the “Look Inside” feature for this book, I knew I would love it. But the actual volume FAR
exceeded expectations. The production value of the book is special, beginning with a cover with embossed touches and stately metallic typography. Various fold-outs appear throughout the book, featuring images of appropriately-colored marbleized papers…….perfect grace notes to illustrate the color-themed charts. This book performs well on many levels — there is ample text, if you want to explore the academic aspect of color and nature…….but if, like me, you want to be inspired by visual references, this book is a bonanza. Archival images abound. Think: minerals, shells, bird eggs, anatomical charts, maps, drawers-full of collected artifacts, glass domes and taxidermy birds, etc. All with color annotations, and
swatches. This book takes a “micro” look at color — and provides a “macro” amount of information and visual enjoyment. A cabinet of curiosities — and delights! — for the artist and reader.

Beautiful but

The images are on matte paper and not sharp. While they are beautiful, I would not call them high quality. This is in large part because the images are reproductions from old books. Also, many images are very small.

MORE INSPIRATIONAL THAN BOTANICAL PAINTER’S REFERENCE.?
July 12, 2021

There is no question that this is an exquisite volume, lovely to look through and study. I think.it fills an important niche in the history of natural color palettes. I was disappointed, however, that It seemed of little practical use for me as a botanical illustrator. While there are many bird illustrations and pages of insects and bird’s eggs, there is relatively scant attention given to plants and flowers. The suggestions of color mixes tend to be rather repetitive and not especially relevant for the watercolorist. There is a chart which converts the named color combinations to Winsor and Newton watercolor names. I found this of some interest. For me, the book proves more inspirational than reference.

Not believable as painter
July 29, 2021

I found the book ‘Very Disappointing’ as a painter, after reading the description of the book I anticipated the book of items and their colors to be of use as an artist but it is neither. It’s complicated, shows no real color of items, very disturbing, frustrating to even read or understand.
I would return the book but the cost already, not worth it to spend even more.
“Just one more example that I should no longer buy items on line, or believe the words used to sell the item.”

ROBIN SINCLAIR
The perfect guide to nature’s colors in paint
June 26, 2021

This book shows what colors in nature (stone, birds, plants) were called historically and what the issues are with historical colors. Written by a real expert in the field who knows what these colors signify. It is a glorious book, but written for those who really value the history of color in paint and decorative schemes.

Faded colors and impossible to clean cover
September 11, 2021

The colors throughout the book seem washed out and faded. I don’t know if this because the original drawings it’s trying to emulate are faded or it’s the printing process, because the paper of the book is not gloss. Also the cover is made of raw paper-like surface and has zero lamination. The book cover came dirty from and when I tried to clean it with a damp paper towel, it chafed and damaged the cover. If you plan to hold it with your hands and read it, it will most likely get smudged and discolored as the dry paper of the cover will absorb and retain whatever oil is in your hands.

An inspiring book for an artist’s studio!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 8, 2021

Beautifully produced, full of information and high quality illustrations and photos. An inspiring book for nature lovers and people who love colour! I bought this as a book to keep on my studio bookshelf and it’s one I know that I’ll refer to again and again. For me, this will provide great colour palette inspiration. For those of you who would like to see inside the book in detail, I’ve posted a video on my YouTube channel (I’m not sure if I’m allowed to add a link here, so just search ‘Natasha Newton art’ on YouTube, and you should find it!). I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this book – it’s one of the most beautiful and useful books I’ve seen in a long time.

Maybe a faulty copy, but the colours are dull.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 26, 2021

I’m a bit disappointed with this book. I don’t know if I got a dodgy print or what, but the colours throughout the book look dull. Nature as I see with my eyes has more vibrsnt colours…
