The Authors
Elton John’s career achievements to date are unsurpassed. An absolute must for Elton fans

This is Elton John’s only first hand autobiography, and it is astounding. Elton pulls no punches throughout, delving into accounts of depression and suicide attempts, drug addiction, break-ups and even his cancer diagnosis, but the book does not look to the audience for sympathy. It’s just Elton, straight up. His voice is warm and genial, but he makes clear that he is an imperfect person on so many levels, but that he has persevered regardless.
An absolute must for any fan of Elton, or anyone who loves rock biographies.

It’s actually more than a little bit funny

I thought I knew all the stories. I’m pretty sure I knew all the songs. But this book has been a revelation. It’s a little bit funny without being snide, and insightful without being maudlin. The work of a classy man who can look back on his life and laugh. The only element that I feel was lacking was a real analysis of the songs. He often brushes over an album with a breezy paragraph or two, whereas that’s my main connection with Elton–his albums. Nevertheless, it is a very enjoyable read, or listen, if you are doing the Audible version. And then if I need insightful musical analysis I can turn to His Song, by Liz Rosenthal, available at https://www.online store.com/His-Song-Musical-Journey-Elton/dp/0823088928

A Must Read!!!!

If you’re an Elton John fan this is a must read!!!! I loved every minute of it! What makes this book so interesting is that Elton John is completely real and raw. You’ll find yourself laughing, and then near tears as you read about his life from a young boy through today. He delves into his use of cocaine, the AIDS epidemic, and Princess Diana. You also learn why he believes he never contracted AIDS, and having nearly died (not from drugs either). He also talks about John Lennon, Gianni Versace, George Michael, and of course Freddie Mercury. So many stories about his famous friends who made them human. I especially loved the stories about Rod Stewart peppered throughout the book. Go buy & read this book now!

Honest, brilliant retelling of an extraordinary life

Having been a fan of Sir Elton since my tweens (shhh…don’t tell him), I preordered this book months ago, when I first heard of its release. I was not disappointed. Sir Elton lays bare the good and the bad, without excusing his wild and often inappropriate behavior. But the best thing is you feel like you really get to know this fine fellow. For all his lavish lifestyle and extraordinary talent, he really is just a person like all of us in that he seeks love and to be loved. After many trials and tribulations, he finds it with the man of his dreams and has two adorable little boys to which he is a kind and gentle parent. His early life and his own childhood were tragic by comparison, but he seems to have put it all behind him in order to be a good husband and father. His songs will undoubtedly live forever, but there’s something extra special about a man who sees his children as his real legacy. Bravo, Sir Elton!

Approachable the casual fan, just enough detail for the devoted

Elton’s more intense fans will have to wade through both (1) a heavy dose of self-examination with the common theme being “it was my fault, not theirs”, and (2) many stories that we have heard in press interviews over the years. In-between, however, are a fair amount of golden nuggets where Elton fills in gaps with details that we had not heard about until now— and those moments are more than worth the price of admission. Does a well searched visit to YouTube give us more insight into Australia & the MSO in ‘86 or more insight into what it felt like in Seattle for the Thom Bell sessions? Yes, unfortunately YouTube outperforms this book in those respects. As a matter of fact there’s barely a moment spent on Bell in the book. However we cannot expect a book that is written for EJ-geeks alone, and I begrudgingly admit Elton found the sweet spot in not boring the casual fan with needless detail while still managing to give the devotees a significant dose of original content.

Incredible life story of EJ!

One of the best books I’ve ever read! This book is written from the heart, to give us all the legacy of Elton John in his own words and truth. A definite must-read if you’ve ever enjoyed the many songs he has created and performed for decades around the world. What a journey! Can’t put this book down!!! There are photos included, and I recommend the audio version as well!
