“An accessible, optimistic field guide to the future.”—San Francisco Chronicle
“Reading this book is like sitting down with a creative, optimistic friend—and getting up as a new version of yourself.” – Daniel H. Pink, New York Times bestselling author of When
The COVID-19 pandemic, increasingly frequent climate disasters, a new war — events we might have called “unimaginable” or “unthinkable” in the past are now reality. Today it feels more challenging than ever to feel unafraid, hopeful, and equipped to face the future with optimism. How do we map out our lives when it seems impossible to predict what the world will be like next week, let alone next year or next decade? What we need now are strategies to help us recover our confidence and creativity in facing uncertain futures.
In Imaginable, Jane McGonigal draws on the latest scientific research in psychology and neuroscience to show us how to train our minds to think the unthinkable and imagine the unimaginable. She invites us to play with the provocative thought experiments and future simulations she’s designed exclusively for this book, with the goal to:
- Build our collective imagination so that we can dive into the future and envision, in surprising detail, what our lives will look like ten years from now
- Develop the courage and vision to solve problems creatively
- Take actions and make decisions that will help shape the future we desire
- Access “urgent optimism,” an unstoppable force within each of us that activates our sense of agency
Imaginable teaches us to be fearless, resilient, and bold in realizing a world with possibilities we cannot yet imagine—until reading this transformative, inspiring, and necessary book

Over the next six months I trained from zero on a single speed bike to ride a 50 mile grand fondo, while being incredibly ill from complications from Crohn’s Disease.
I spent two years figuring out how to train with dangerously high inflammation levels, a low red blood cell count, and several surgeries for Crohn’s. I gamed my way from SF to LA with ALC/Lifecycle as well as finishing the Hope for Crohn’s Triathlon and putting my disease into deep remission.
Seven years later, I again found myself cooking dinner and listening to Jane and Tim talk about being more resilient and empowered in these crazy times by harnessing an imaginable future. The inward looking to outward, reflects my own journey, I am now the cofounder of an education startup and about to publish my first cookbook for people with Crohn’s Disease.
Jane’s new book, “Imaginable” challenges the notion of an unimaginable future, giving us a toolkit and game chest to play and envision the future and how we relate and participate in it. She invites us to time travel, play, and prepare through engaging with what feels uncomfortable or scary. 5/7
If “Superbetter” was about gaming agency to overcome personal obstacles and building resilience and support, “Imaginable” expands these skills to how we relate and participate in the uncertain and often overwhelming state of the world.
“Imaginable”, like “Superbetter”, empowers readers like a spotlight cutting through the fog of fear and uncertainty and places us firmly in the present by playing with the future and inviting us to be “Urgent Optimists”. I’m looking forward to her 2033 book club meetup where we can share all that we saw and saw coming thanks to her work.”
I will soon update this unsolicited review with more details as I read this book.
Disclaimer & full disclosure: I do not know Jane nor anyone related to her commercially or by blood. I am a long time fan and I am the Tampa Joe antidotally mentioned in a few paragraphs of her book, Superbetter, page 253. I was not asked to write this review.”
