An Absolute Triumph

This book is unlike anything I’ve ever read. The plot is an impeccably precise web of tension between finely wrought characters, each achingly human and more than human. The blend of magic and science, history and mythology, reaches the deliciously hyperbolic heights of superheroes and sci-fi, but is always grounded by questions of morality, physical and psychological limitations, and laws of conservation. This was a feast: cerebral yet unpretentious, dangerous yet tender, wholly original yet achingly familiar. With a nuanced, finely balanced understanding of humans and a deft hand for making the impossible feel plausible, Olivie Blake has created something that feels like a window into an alternate universe rather than a work of fiction. I can’t wait to find out what happens next!

I want an actual ending. Maybe a Part 2?

First, this story is absolutely incredible. I found it super hard to put down. The characters are super intriguing and I found myself rooting for one, and then deciding that ‘no, they are not someone I want to root for’ and then rooting for another. It was astounding seeing how your perceptions of all the protagonists changed as the story evolved. However, my fatal flaw is that I want to know how a story ends. I’ve watched hours of terrible B movies, because of this flaw. And this book ends before the story ends. Which rather leaves all my excitement with no place to go. And I’d happily pay for a Part 2 to see how it ends, but I was totally anticipating a climax and denouement and it was just not there. But the story is super exciting and I hope to read an ending some day.

You won’t be able to put it down

The Atlas Six centers around a secret society that initiates 5 new members every 10 years or so. Six candidates with the rarest powers are chosen to compete for a spot, like a fellowship, with a thrilling twist. Olivie Blake’s talent for writing intriguing characters, an intricate plot, and intelligent and artful prose really comes through in this story. Self-described as “dark academia,” or Donna Tartt’s The Secret History meets The Magicians/Kingsman, I would also recommend The Atlas Six for fans of X-men and Harry Potter (for the mutant-like power specialties and overall magical learning environment), as well as How to Get Away With Murder or Quantico (for the dynamic of highly competitive classmates get involved in something much bigger than themselves), and for fans of such thought-provoking and mind-twisting hits like Netflix’s Dark and Christopher Nolan’s Inception.
