Gripping, pacey read
Reviewed in India on 9 September 2020
Having read the author’s first book, Murder in the City which I enjoyed immensely, I was naturally drawn to this one. An enjoyable, pacey read, the book deals with cases I was familiar with, having read about them in the Calcutta newspapers. The only thing that could have been better was the translation. This one was a little disjointed and led to the pace lagging in certain stories. Worth reading the original Bengali version.

Real thrill seeking

It’s a thrill seeking
Although I get bored reading
But I read each case a day
Which makes it bit consuming within week a half to complete
It’s good narrated
Well printing quality is satisfying
What else could I demand
Just can assume this in slight range to below 200
But still i have no problem with it in 224

Nice book
Reviewed in India on 19 June 2019
The book gives a nice insight of real-life cases from the perspective of a policeman. Most of the books on this topic are fiction, and from the perspective of a writer. This is the first one I found that is from the other side. It was interesting to see the depth of investigation that they have to go through in each case in order to bring the culprits to justice – quite an eye-opener.
As a true crime fan i like it. The cases were unknown to me. There is no sexual crime mentioned, which is good. Those crimes are heavy to read. But the first book “Murder in the city” was much better. In this book each and every case is different from each other, which is quite great. The case named”The slaughter of innocence” truly is bizarre. It was truly a motiveless one but quite disturbing.

Great job by both writer and translator
Reviewed in India on 7 December 2019
Kudos to both the author and the translator for a book which is not just interesting but in places gripping as well. I generally avoid reading books on crime by Indian authors because I have often found the style and tone to be melodramatic and the content verbose. This book is a pleasant exception. The presentation of the cases is matter-of-fact, the way the investigation is documented as it develops places the reader right in the midst of events as it were and above all there is no trumpet blowing or sensationalism in narrating events and successful outcomes (not all the outcomes are successful e.g. the Stoneman case). The language is clear, crisp and concise and makes for easy reading. To summarize this review if you are into crime, mystery and detection you will not regret purchasing this book.
