Unlike the previous books about FBI profilers Violet Darger and Victor Kodiak they almost disappear into secondary figures in this highly intense novel of a college town on the brink of total extinction. Nothing it seems will settle many scores until the undergrads burst into flames.

Real Life Frightening Scenario

Couple Killer, the 9th book in the Violet Darger Series by L.T. Vargus and Tim McBain, has storylines that feel as though they’ve been copied from real life. A killer is on the loose in a small town college campus, targeting couples with rape and murder. FBI profiler, Violet Darger and her partner, Victor Loshak, arrive to lend their profiling and investigative skills. Delving into the small campus police’s unsolved crimes files, they uncover an escalating pattern of attacks that could be the work of the couple killer. Did the University know? Was there a cover up? That seems more likely as the university president seems more concerned with the reputation of the school than with the safety of the students. Both ignoring the advice of law enforcement and manipulating them, decisions are made that tip the balance of calm toward chaos. Darger and Loshak struggle to stay above the fray and to keep their focus on hunting down and catching the killer. The action packed sequences of the narrative start early, and keep relentlessly churning until the last page. There is some movement in the longer story arcs, but this is mostly a self-contained story. The writing is very good, and takes the reader right along through chaotic scenes and blindingly fast action. At some points, I was actually breathless as I was reading.
