“A compelling and important history that this nation desperately needs to hear.” ―Bryan Stevenson, New York Times bestselling author of Just Mercy and executive director of the Equal Justice Initiative

Winfred Rembert grew up in a family of Georgia field laborers and joined the Civil Rights Movement as a teenager. He was arrested after fleeing a demonstration, survived a near-lynching at the hands of law enforcement, and spent seven years on chain gangs. During that time he met the undaunted Patsy, who would become his wife. Years later, at the age of fifty-one and with Patsy’s encouragement, he started drawing and painting scenes from his youth using leather tooling skills he learned in prison.

Chasing Me to My Grave presents Rembert’s breathtaking body of work alongside his story, as told to Tufts Philosopher Erin I. Kelly. Rembert calls forth vibrant scenes of Black life on Cuthbert, Georgia’s Hamilton Avenue, where he first glimpsed the possibility of a life outside the cotton field. As he pays tribute, exuberant and heartfelt, to Cuthbert’s Black community and the people, including Patsy, who helped him to find the courage to revisit a traumatic past, Rembert brings to life the promise and the danger of Civil Rights protest, the brutalities of incarceration, his search for his mother’s love, and the epic bond he found with Patsy.

Vivid, confrontational, revelatory, and complex, Chasing Me to My Grave is a searing memoir in prose and painted leather that celebrates Black life and summons readers to confront painful and urgent realities at the heart of American history and society.

The book is a welcome addition to the history of Black art in America and a great read!

I pre-ordered this book, not being very familiar with Winfred Rembert, but because I’m a huge fan of “outsider” art and its practitioners, and because I’m quite familiar with his hometown. I’ve been photographing the landmarks around Cuthbert for nearly 15 years, and it was interesting hearing him call the names of little towns not much known anywhere else. At a time when it seems more and more Black artists are getting their due, it’s worth noting that Winfred Rembert began to make art later in life as a way of coming to terms with his difficult past. He notes in his preface that he was hesitant to publish the book in his lifetime, not knowing how local whites in Southwest Georgia, and his friends from that time for that matter, might react. But we can all be thankful that he took the time to tell his story to Erin I. Kelly. As a white Southerner who has always been aware of the contributions of African-Americans but who has also been dismayed by their absence from official histories, this book fills that void. The stories might be seen as the typical things a young Black man of Mr. Rembert’s time would have had to persevere, but his candor in telling them is anything but typical. His color leather works are visual biographies in themselves. My only regret is that I never got to meet the man. This book should be well-received and I can’t recommend it highly enough.

Both Art and American History

This book was intended as a birthday gift for an art lover. I started leafing through it and found it irresistible to the point where I read the whole book before wrapping it. What an incredible story, narrated and edited in such a way as to make you feel as if Mr. Rembert is telling his story just to you. His stories of perseverance, endurance, love for his wife and children, realization of his physiological needs and expressions of his incredible talents culminates in his personal victory over the deep emotional scars from his years in the Jim Crow south. This is not the type of art book that you flip through. That would be a disservice to the story and the artist. Take your time, sit down with a glass of wine or a cup of coffee or a good cocktail and savor this story page by page from beginning to end.

This book is straight from the mouth of a brave man who with the support of his wife Patsy, their children and their friends he tells us a firsthand account of the brutality and racism of our country. From the rejection of his mother to the beatings from the police in his town to nearly escaping being lynched only to be put on the chain gang for 7 years he rises to become a talented artist who still found beauty and love in this world. It’s a MUST read

This book paints a very clear picture of how difficult it was for Blacks who were born and raised in the Deep South. Winfred’s artwork is amazing!

A Gripping Story of Suffering, Love and Art

This book tells the story of a Black man’s life from a difficult childhood to life on the chain gang, and life in the illegal drug trade. Against all odds, he found love and redemption. Later in life, he began telling his story through pictures carved and painted on leather. This is a real page-turner. You won’t forget it!

What an extraordinary book. Winfred’s life story through words and his amazing artwork is captivating. I really want to see even one of his creations in person, I am drawn into them, the coloring and construction are mesmerizing. What a legacy he leaves for his family and the world. Thank you Erin Kelly for this book and to my friend Bernie for recommending it!

Tough as some of this is to read, it’s enlightening to understand Mr. Rembert’s truths, and experience with him the beauty that emerged.
