Passable second act

This is perhaps my favorite series by Krout but a few plot holes stop it from being great. To name the most glaring, being stuck as a teenager doesn’t make you a sociopath and suddenly becoming an adult doesn’t radically change who you are. The character shifts are sudden, make no sense, and are fairly poorly explained. The titular MC goes from a grunting Neanderthal who cares very little about anything except Cookie, to a well spoken, emotionally available friend just b/c he got Cookie back? Too much happens to make the plot go where the author wants that run contrary to the characters and world that has been established.

So I really admire the audacity of the character Luke. He is an insane monster similar to the Hulk with a willingness to. Smash first and move on without asking questions later. He also is smart enough to try and make good decisions even if he has lived the life of a caveman and fighting every day for nearly 4 decades. This is a fantastic character and he absolutely carries this book.

Sadly all other elements of this story except some of the combat scenes which are interesting. Other than that this is lacking the wit and real humor of the first book.

While technically well written the author relies on out of place real world gags for humor and not only does this not work but these scenes are the kind of forced humor that barely gets a chuckle after it is explained to someone. This isn’t Deadpool. The author isn’t Ryan Reynolds. At no time are jokes from our world going to work in a fantasy world like this. Like the skill in the book Just Stop.

The scope of this story is also quite narrow, with the action that involves people so insignificant we meet 3 new named characters that have any notable interactions at all. There is no reason for this shallow level of writing.

Seriously this is just about Luke and a little about the other 3. If not for Luke being just ridiculous in the best way this book would be aweful. With Luke though it is a 3 1/2 star story about the misadventures of a muscle bound caveman.

Brilliant

Krout is a good author. We know this already and he’s gotten way better over the years. Still a bit odd but every single author there is is quirky in some way. That said I love this series already and there’s only two books. The comedy is spot on, childish but not in a he who sucks at writing and still puts out the Land way. The characters are growing and we get the juxtaposition between the narrator being an older more mature Zed and the story having a very much useless Zed as one of the main characters of the story. It’s oddly comforting and well done. The story is progressing in both the past and the present which will be interesting once they catch up though I hope that takes at least a few more books. And I for one hope that more than one of this series comes out this year, but it’s a quality story and that takes awhile so maybe one really good one? Either way I eagerly await the next and hope it’s as good as this one has proven to be.
