Enjoy a weak-to-strong story with a main character who earns his power without overshadowing everyone around him, with plenty of loot, adventurers, gods and magic. Rich characters and world-building offer humor, political intrigue and slice-of-life elements alongside lots of monster fighting and adventure.

 Great series

December 29, 2021

This is a great series and this book is no different. I love the story arc. Some things I wish went differently, but the story was great. One star removed for it being rife with anti Americanism. Definitely the pompous vision of a foreigner on an island protected by others. Like the MC said in book 1, the author can take ideological positions without ever having to deal with the consequences. Being anti American will feel like a great position until you need us.

starting to unravel and come off unhinged

December 31, 2021

Jason has PTSD bad and yet this went unnoticed somehow by his friends in the magical world; magical friends who can read a person’s aura like a google road map with live sat views.

The whole arch-plot of the series is further explained except it makes no sense in its implementation. You open astral spaces on land to cause conflict OR underwater to promote energy transfer in a stealth manner because there are no magic capable sentients underwater ; there is no reason to do both given the Builder level goals (design specifications it turns out.)

And finally the author obviously has problems with govt in OZ, and like every other socialist blame the USA for his countries failures. [aka the author can’t stop ragging

More worldbuilding, less combat, plenty of snark

December 29, 2021

Review with mild spoilers.

A big part of Jason’s foray into the world of magic and monsters, in the previous books, are predicated on him fighting said monsters (whether they’re actual bonafide monsters or “evil humans”). Not so much in this book. Combat takes up much less of the book than the previous ones in the series.

The fighting takes a back seat in this iteration as we find Jason back on Earth. Here he’s trying to tackle dying (again) while finding that Earth has more in store for him magic-wise, than he ever expected.

We find a more serious and introspective Jason looking to reinsert himself into his families lives. He is thoughtful and pensive and we read about him processing a lot of his thoughts from both his “new” time back home on Earth and from his time as an adventurer. As Jason winds down we see him develop as a character and getting some long overdue handling on a bad case of PTSD.

Don’t worry, there’s still plenty of snark to go around, and a fair bit of combat too. Status screens and power descriptions are few and far in between though, the holes filled with worldbuilding, back story and character development – for a lot of side characters as well. Side characters who are wonderfully fleshed out, each with their own personalities, dreams and desires. This is a change of pace from the previous books, but a welcome one, as I found it to be as equal of a pageturner as the others.

I was initially skeptic towards the ending of book 3, because I couldn’t really see how Jason’s experiences would translate well into being back on Earth in a “normal” setting. Boy was I wrong.

While different, I can wholeheartedly recommend this book to any fan of the series. Looking forward to see what the next book has in store. It’s gonna be a long 4 months.
