Anouk later studied at the International Center of Photography and has developed several notable bodies of work, including Wild Horses of Cumberland Island and West: The American Cowboy. Her work has appeared in prominent galleries and museums, and earned accolades from the International Photography Awards and International Monochrome Awards. Her books and her art have been praised by international publications, such as Vanity Fair, Town & Country, Time, Harper’s Bazaar, Daily Mail UK, and Garden & Gun, among many others.

Stunning work of art

Disappointing, I think I’m going to do a true to form cowboy photobook

I think this is just an aesthetic piece of photography with no real basis in a full fledged take on reality or history. I was sold this book from my local bookstore and was expecting a more historically accurate portrayal of the original cowboys, meaning Native Americans, Mexicans, and Black men leading up to new urban cowboys/rancher. Instead I got this. I ended up retuning it to the bookstore I got it from because I didn’t want it in my home. Was very disappointed, for people interested in the early days of the cowboys this is not for you, its like a hot take of MAGAt country.

A Masterpiece

I don’t aspire to be a cowboy or rancher but this book is a masterpiece.
I really enjoyed the inspirational words from Ora Brown and Derrick Begay.
Krantz captures stunning landscapes, sometimes in harsh conditions, snow, dust storm and her constant use of B & W, together with her mastership of exposure control result in photos that go much beyond regular color pictures in the sense that the reader feels compelled to try to understand what message of life or action is given by the cowboys/cowgirls stance.
I read this book several times and can see there is a story behind each picture. Each day is faced with very little gear other than a horse, a saddle, a rope, and …their hat. However, they don’t look bored or unsatisfied, which –I believe- tends to show a high dedication to their way of life.
All this together sends a message: is it sacred land as Native Indians say?
To make a long story short, this is what leaks from Krantz’s book.

This book is piece of art we are truly proud to have in our home. Krantz may not be from the American west, but it only takes reading a few of her words or seeing a handful of her images to know that she understands it better than most. Not only is she a remarkably talented photographer, Krantz has honed her craft of storytelling. The awe-inspiring images along with captivating stories of her subjects make this book a standout among its contemporaries. Everything about it exudes quality – from the paper upon which it is printed, to the ink that makes the images, to the thoughtful crafting of the sequence of stories- American Cowboys is a true gem.

Breathtaking and raw

I found this book to be achingly beautiful and raw. Growing up on a ranch, seeing this book was like looking at home. Being able to catch glimpses of real cowboys being their most authentic selves made me feel like I had a piece of home with me. There are so many depictions of the American cowboy that the media has warped. This book gave a glimpse of the true American cowboy.
