5.0 out of 5 stars It’s Good (Great, actually) to Read The King!

I loved this book from the first page. Right from the get go, where Mel recounts his happy childhood in Brooklyn, I felt like I did as a child at my grandparents house, when my grandpa would tell stories of his own upbringing during The Great Depression. It was like I was back in that kitchen and those stories were being told to me alone.
Mel manages to maintain that warm tone of storytelling straight to the reader throughout his youth, service in World War II and long career as a writer, actor, director and producer. The stories are frequently sprinkled with tangential stories and non-sequiturs that convey his manic energy and stream of consciousness that is so much a part of his movies and shows that fans are familiar with, as well as contributing to that personal storytelling feel, as if he is conveying things that just pop into his head that relate to what he was talking about.
Another thing to love about this book is that it will give you a greater appreciation of the impact Mel has made on the entertainment industry as a whole. Sports analysts frequently cite ‘coaching trees’ when talking about the impact a well-regarded coach or manager has had on subsequent generations of coaches. Mel Brooks has an entire forest in entertainment, writers, actors, songwriters, composers, directors, producers, the whole schmear. As an example, when looking for a director for the Brooksfilms-produced “The Elephant Man,” Mel was instrumental in hiring a largely unknown David Lynch, who at the time was only known for the brilliant, but weird and disturbing, “Eraserhead.” If Lynch had not had Mel in his corner and gotten “The Elephant Man,” we likely would never have had “Dune,” “Mulholland Drive,” “Blue Velvet,” or “Twin Peaks” (not to mention all the works that Lynch himself inspired). The roots of Mel’s entertainment trees spread throughout the industry.
I cannot recommend this book highly enough. It is truly Good to be the King, but even better to witness his greatness.

 A little disappointing …

December 7, 2021

if you’re expecting a memoir, because this isn’t it. It’s a review of his work, padded with a few too many song lyrics/excerpts of dialogue from his films/speeches (which I probably found excessive because I’d long ago committed them to memory). However, the first few chapters cover his early, pre-show biz life, and I found those most engaging. As you proceed, he provides some glimpses into his comedic methodology, and these, in tandem with the early chapters, are probably the best peek we’ll get into his genius brain. However, late in the book, I found myself wishing it would end, and that quite surprised me. By that time, it had become repetitive and a bit dull. But Mel states (at the end of the book) that he did it because he was stuck not working due to Covid, and his son encouraged him to write it. That somehow lessened my disappointment (and made me rewatch a few of his films).

That having been said, I love Mel and have for decades. I would gladly have given him ten times the price of the book for having made me laugh so hard so often. If you’re a fan, it’s worth the read.
