RICK SHAQ GOLDSTEIN SAYS: I LOVE THE SOPRANOS… BUT THIS IS NOT A BOOK… IT’S A TRANSCRIPT!
November 4, 2021

I have absolutely loved the Sopranos from the opening episode all the way through to the most disappointing finale of a large scale series in history… but that having been said… I feel like I was totally bamboozled in the purchase of this… NOT A BOOK… NOT A BOOK…

A book of beauty or power… has an author that captivates you… or at least tries to display some type of literary artistry… or if such talents are beyond the writer’s grasp… he or she… tries to entertain you in some unique way. A writer like an actor or performer… lives and dreams about “touching” their audience. The writer wants to grasp your thoughts… imagination… touch the beat of your heart… lift your spirits… or force tears to your eyes…

No such attempts are evident within the covers of this “TRANSCRIPT”! This is nothing but the transcription of interviews/discussions from prior podcasts. I have reviewed over seven-hundred-books on alone… and I have never before come across something so poorly disguised as a book. (Perhaps… one other book that incorporated many interviews.) To me a book is a sacred thing. From the time I was a child and punished for bad behavior and had to stay in my room with nothing but books… I found that without leaving my room… I could travel around the world… or go to outer space… or go back in time to watch a game at Ebbets Field… fueled simply by the creativity and hooking my imagination with that of the author’s.

There is nothing at all like that in this publication. If you’ve ever been in a court trial and you had to read the transcripts… that’s what this is… have you ever interned as a law clerk… and had to review transcripts… that’s what this is. If that was all made clear to me and potential purchasers… in the pre-release blurbs… that would be a totally different situation. I feel totally mislead! If I knew this ahead of time I would have waited for the paperback to be released.

I hope I have helped some potential buyers so they know what they’re deciding on. By the way… if you haven’t seen the Soprano’s Prequel yet… I’d suggest you find a good book instead!

This is not a book!
November 4, 2021

I am going to sound like a broken record here but as others have stated already, this is definitely not a book. I just can’t believe that Steve and Michael had the gall to deceive us loyal fans on this all just to earn a buck. I enjoy the Talking Sopranos podcast very much but this deception has certainly given me pause about these two for the time being. I may have to give them both a break for a while. Love The Sopranos tv show dearly but man, I feel gypped. I think I’ll just go re-watch the series instead.

It’s just a transcript of the podcast
November 4, 2021

I would have never purchased this if I knew it was just verbatim conversations from the podcast – which I love – and a few new photos. I have grown rather fond of Mike and Steve through their excellent podcast and their charming banter, but this book has soured me a bit. If you’ve listened to the podcast there is literally no reason to buy this book.

Save Your Money and listen to Talking Sopranos
November 2, 2021
This is not written, it is transcribed interviews from Talking Sopranos.
Completely misleading. You’re buying some candid photos and an introduction.
Listen to the podcast and save your money. Really disappointed in Schirippa and Imperioli who sold this as a book they wrote, never mentioning that it’s just a transcription of Talking Sopranos.

Oral history? I think not
November 5, 2021

This was not a total waste for me, despite being a big sopranos fan, I had not listened to the podcast. However, the transcript nature of the “book” led to a lot of repetition and interplay between Michael and Steve that while probably amusing did not read well. Further proof of the diminishing returns of sopranos material is that this book obviously was timed with the release of Many Saints of Newark which was a major disappointment as well. Short format movie is obviously not the strength of Chase, er al, and a oral history is not just a transcript of previous spoken word instead of interviews.. A great example of an outstanding oral history is Bob Hoskin’s Led Zeppelin book, which gave lots of new stuff and told the same anecdotes from different POV.

Fantastic book and a great read!
November 3, 2021

Wow, just received my copy of the book Woke Up This Morning, the Definitive History of The Sopranos. And it did not disappoint ! Amazing behind the scenes stories of how the show came into being and a lot of great juicy details. I learned a lot about the actors having been a huge fan of the show from the beginning.

If you’ve ever wanted to look behind the curtain of how one of the most iconic shows in history was made this book is it!

The back and forth banter between Steve Schirripa and Michael Imperoili is hilarious!
Not to mention the beautiful the intimate behind the scenes photos which are great!

I’d definitely recommend it and give it 5 Stars! I’ll be ordering additional copies as Christmas gifts to give out to my friends who are big fans of the show as well!

Thoroughly enjoyable read that adds a whole new dimension to The Sopranos
November 4, 2021

The book is filled with backstory and information relating to the creation and filming of The Sopranos.

I loved it for 3 reasons:

1. It adds a new dimension because the reader gains a new insight into the show by sharing the perspective of how the show was made, how it developed.

2. Complexities of the storyline and flashes of detail easily missed are highlighted and, let’s face it, the narrative is very busy – even after watching the show 3 times I am finding things that I missed.

3. It isn’t a summary of each episode – the book explores the development of the show from season to season, sure, but focuses on the themes and characters.

A definite winner for anyone who likes, let alone loves, The Sopranos.

Worth the Wait
November 6, 2021

As an old fan of the HBO series who doesn’t watch podcasts or stream reruns, I preordered this book months ago after seeing an interview with the authors on an episode of “Josh Gates Tonight”. The long wait for the book was worth it and I may now decide to download the series and revisit favorite episodes with the insights gained from the book which unlocked a flood of two-decade-old memories.

Entertaining book but no photos in the U.K. version
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 11, 2021

I love the Talking Sopranos podcast and couldn’t wait to get this book.

Sadly, one of the main issues with this U.K. version is that there are no photographs included. Not a single one.

I’m not sure if there was some rights issue or something but if you’re looking for behind the scenes images, you may be disappointed.

The actual written content is pretty cool though.

If you’ve listened to the Podcast don’t bother
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 11, 2021

I was expecting a lot more, a companion piece to the Podcast that had additional material and photos, but this is just a transcript of the Podcasts.

Wish I’d waited for reviews as if I’d known this I wouldn’t have bought it.

The Podcast gets 5/5, the book gets 1 if you’ve listened to the Podcasts, and 3 if you haven’t.

UPDATE: I received a new copy from HarperCollins with the photos free of charge so adding a star back.

I’m a sopranos nut and was looking forward to seeing the photographs. The problem is there are no photographs in the book, massive let down. Go to YouTube and it’s all there with the podcast.

What A Let Down
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 15, 2021

Like most Sopranos fans who have enjoyed the podcast I’ve been waiting patiently on this book being released. The teasers on the podcast with pictures from the book being shared by Steve Schirripa making it all the more exciting as I wait. And then this book arrives. No pictures and all it really is, is the content from the podcasts in a written format. Why there’s a difference between the UK and US book is anyones guess but it’s caught me, and by the look of the other reviews, lots of other fans out and left a very bad taste.

Only for the super fans
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 10, 2021

The book is just their pod cast written down to create a book. I found the beginning really interesting as it talks about how each actor got their part in the Soprano’s but after that it becomes really boring as it goes onto dissect various episodes with the catch phrase being “Do you remember”.
I think perhaps this book for Soprano super fans only.
