This book is a giant headache

February 26, 2020

This book is not a great resource. I give it 2 stars only because the disease-specific chapters, known as the pharmacotherapeutics with multiple drugs section, are decent. The pharmacotherapeutics with single drugs chapters, focusing on classes of drugs, reads like a lumped-up copy-paste of dozens of Stat Pearls. There’s little to no editing going on. I’ve found tons of simple typos and major errors that affect meaning, such as “leukotriene agonists” as a treatment for asthma. A mistake like that in a fifth edition? For a first-time learner like myself, this led to me scrambling to understand how that could be true, only to find it wasn’t true. I’m constantly fact checking this book. Terminology changes from paragraph to paragraph. Under the pharmacokinetics sections you may have drugs in order of A, B, C, X, Y, Z, but in the next paragraph they’re reordered as Y, B, C, X, A, Z, leading to an unnecessary headache trying to take notes. Paragraphs are wasted on drugs such as terfenadine which isn’t on the market and hasn’t been for like 30 years. Multiple paragraphs about decades-old FDA warnings which could be cut to the most recent recommendation. I struggle to tell what’s important information and what isn’t because a lot of it isn’t. Can you tell I’m frustrated? t’s a shame that this is the book I have to use for school.

 Disorganized, repetitive, inconsistent.

This was a required textbook for my FNP pharmacology course. The book is essentially numerous stat pearls copy and pasted into “categorized” sections. You will read 2 pages of content, take down notes, to only find out that the medication described was discontinued. Note that the book will not disclose this until the end of numerous “informative” paragraphs.

I am doing well in my course but am essentially utilizing other sources of material as a guideline as this book is disorganized. They could have worked on improving the spaces and margins in the dosage scheduling for medications. I feel like the author was trying to sound way smarter than she actually is. It’s a good thing she cited pretty much everything. Not worth your time.

Repetitive, describes every drug in the class, rather than focusing on ones in current use

I agree with others that the repetitive detail makes it useless after a point. My undergrad Pharmacology book by Lilley was much better organized so that you got the key points of the mechanism and side effects without overly repeating everything. I wish these textbooks could focus on the high points of the class then go into the exceptions when necessary. A good instructor should guide you toward the drugs we actually prescribe so you don’t waste your time memorizing drugs that aren’t even
