The principles of genetics are relatively simple. However, the complexity of the 3 billion nucleotides in the human genome means that these simple principles must be applied to a remarkably variable information base. This book emphasizes the structure, organization, and physiologic consequences of genetic variations in humans. Sequencing the human genome has identified an unanticipated range of variations; newer techniques likely will find many more. Thus, how the basic principles will be translated from this variant base of DNA through cellular metabolism and physiology cannot currently be predicted. The high frequencies of single nucleotide polymorphisms, copy number variations, inversions, deletions, amplifications, and epigenetic changes already discovered have no precedents—-fully integrating their consequences likely will be complicated. Doesn’t feel like a Road Map book

I’ve used every Road Map book as a map for each core course. Most of them follow a similar format and teaching style. This book was a lot different. Whereas the questions at the end of the chapter usually related to the content and are used to test one’s knowledge, the questions here seem to try and teach something new and test a lot of information not in the book that one is expected to know.
The knowledge gotten across is decent but I also feel a lot of the particular genetic disorders given were not talked about in my class and a lot of the disorders talked about in class were not in here. In the other Road Map books, there has been a lot more overlap between lecture and review book.
All in all, I got more out of the genetic sections in the other Road Map books than the official USMLE Road Map Genetics book. This book does have great illustrations for pedigrees and decent summaries. It will give you the majority of info you need. But I’d also argue it gives you too much information for a review book.

Easy to Understand, But Chapter Reviews Need Revision

Overall this textbook is easy to understand and to the point which is great considering medical terminology is an entry level course and most people taking this class are new to the material entirely. The text requires almost no prior knowledge of human anatomy or anything outside of very basic human biology (ie. organ system function, understanding that the body is made up of cells etc.)
Additionally, the real world applications are a great touch and the text asks you to interpret medical terminology within a mock discharge summary and explain it in lay-man’s terms. This is a great incorporation of active learning.
I think I was most disappointed with the Chapter Review sections. Some of the questions asked in the chapter review contain questions about phrases, abbreviations or terms that were not covered in the chapter being reviewed (or any previous chapters for that matter), so one would be unable to give the appropriate answer without utilizing google or a medical dictionary. This was quite frustrating as it was consistent throughout chapter reviews.
If it wasn’t for the “fluff” of random medical diagnoses within chapters that really have nothing to do with the terminology being taught and the terrible chapter review sections that have you scrambling to decode words on google , this would be a fantastic book.

Does NOT come with Pearson access code

Book is fine, but I thought it came with an access code for MyLab. If you are looking for that – this is not the way.

The book is new, great condition. Exactly what I needed for my class. My fault for not reading the description all the way. It does clearly say that this order does not come with the access code. To order the book with the access code to order this product (0134760611 / 9780134760612 A Living Language PLUS MyLab Medical Terminology with Pearson eText – Access Card Package, 7/e) so unless you want to pay $95 for the access code on top of paying for this book, I would suggest ordering the book with the access code. Hope this was helpful for those who buy without reading the description all the way!!
