The Writers

Dr. Cheng’s main clinical interest is the medical care of surgical patients, including preoperative medical evaluation and the prevention and management of postoperative medical complications. He directs the Medicine Consultation Service at UCSF Medical Center, which performs these functions in a traditional consultation role. In addition, Dr. Cheng developed a novel inpatient service to more intensively address the needs of UCSF’s neurological surgery patients.

Rather than simply consulting, the hospitalist on the Comanagement with Neurosurgery Service proactively identifies and assumes the non-surgical care for patients at high-risk for medical complications. This service also coordinates care with consultants, physician extenders, and ancillary services. At UCSF Medical Center’s Mission Bay campus, Dr. Cheng developed and leads the hospital medicine consultation service that serves the surgical and obstetric services.
