The Writers

Jimmy also co-produces and co-directs with his wife, Chai Vasarhelyi. Their film Meru won the Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival and was on the Oscar shortlist for Best Documentary Feature. Their documentary Free Solo won a BAFTA, seven primetime Emmys, and the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. Jimmy, Chai, and their two children split their time between New York City and Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

Book Binding is Horrible

Jimmy Chin’s attention to detail in his climbing, his photography, his videography, and his editing is absolutely world-class. So I was excited to finally receive his new book, “There and Back”, from yesterday. My excitement quickly turned to disappointment at the low quality of the book binding. The binding literally began falling apart as I opened the book and the pages began separating from the spine. This is not what I would expect from Jimmy. This is a coffee-table book that I would normally be proud to display but instead the book will be hidden on a book shelf alongside other less interesting books.

I want to enjoy this book but since the pages became completely separated from the cover/binding, it’s impossible. I’m hoping I can return it for a new one 🙁

Very poor quality – binding came ripped and low quality paper.

Just like all the other reviews, I preordered this and it showed up with a torn binding. Upon further inspection, the book as a whole is very cheaply thrown together – the photographs are stunning put printed on thin, terrible, low quality paper. Would have expected much, much more considering the price tag. Luckily is allowing a return (original preorder date made it initially ineligible)

Total disappointment Like others have stated the binding was cracking and ripping as I was taking it out of the box. That being said, I still had hope that the quality of the photographs would make up for the poor quality…. WRONG! The overall quality of the book is so bad This book should be proudly displayed as Jimmy is a very talented photographer and sadly it’s being returned

Could Have Been So Good

Jimmy is so talented so we preordered this as soon as we found out about it. I was so excited to open it but the quality is terrible! Photos are blurry and the paper feels low quality. I was expecting glossy photo pages with high quality images. Instead it looks like someone copied low resolution images online and printed them on computer paper. I’m so torn because the photos are stunning but I was expecting a lot better from Jimmy. Might be worth waiting for the reprint.

The photographs in this book are stunning and at times chilling. Like with his film Free Solo, Chin gives you an up-close look at a world that we ordinary people will never experience. The entire book is a work of art. I have ordered extra copies to give as holiday gifts this year!

Fantastic book, awful shipping.

I preordered this book a while back and finally received it today (12/8). I was so excited to check out the book. But when I opened up the box, it was a disappointment. The packaging was subpar! The box was way too big for the book and leads to damaged book corners. The only saving grace was the book was as good as I was expected, I would definitely recommend this book to everyone. However, I do not recommend getting it ship from , maybe getting it from their physical book store…? I really hope can invest or developer some sort of packaging for books and collectibles item.

Worth the wait! I pre-ordered Jimmy Chin’s magnificent book back in August and it was delivered yesterday and OH, MY….what a journey to read and enjoy his incredible stories and photos.

I absolutely love this book! The photos are inspiring. I like Jimmy Chin’s humour reflected in some captions of the photos. Truly goes to show his personality. The stories accompanying some of the expeditions are well-written and concise. Perfect coffee table book!

After reading other reviews it’s sad that some people received bad or damaged copies of this book, I hope they get a proper replacement. Mine came in decent packaging and no damage. The pictures are absolutely stunning and very inspiring.
