Attributes of The Wonder Weeks By Frans X Plooij PDF

How to stimulate your baby’s mental development and help him turn his 10 predictable, great, fussy phases into magical leaps forward describes the incredible mental developmental changes (leaps) and regression periods that all babies go through. Understanding the real reason behind crying, eating and sleeping problems is the only real solution every parent needs. The Wonder Weeks By Frans X Plooij PDF

The Wonder Weeks reveals what’s going on inside baby’s mind. Including a bonus chapter with everything about the relationship between sleep and leaps, as well as unique insight into your baby’s sleeping behavior. The book includes: • Week-by-week guide to baby’s behavior• When to expect the fussy behavior, what this implies (cranky, clingy, crying (the three C’s) behavior) and how to deal with these regression periods (leaps)• A description from your baby’s perspective of the world around him and how you can understand the changes he’s going through• Fun games and gentle activities you can do with your child• Unique insight into your baby’s sleeping behaviour The book is based on the scientific- and parental-world-changing discovery of a phenomenon: all normal, healthy babies appear to be more fussy at very nearly the same ages, regression periods, and sleep less in these phases. These age-related fluctuations in need for body contact and attention (regression periods) are related to major and quite dramatic changes in the brains of the children. These changes enable a baby to enter a whole new perceptual world and, as a consequence, to learn many new skills. This should be a reason for celebration, but as far as the baby is concerned these changes are bewildering. He’s taken aback―everything has changed overnight. It is as if he has woken up on a strange planet. He needs you to guide him and understand what he is going through! Get ready to rediscover the world all over again with your baby… Bonus: Sleep, and the lack of sleep… that’s something we all have to deal with when we have a baby. The bonus chapter includes everything about the relationship between sleep and leaps, as well as unique insight into your baby’s sleeping behavior. Hint: did you know your baby learns (and there’s a lot of brain activity) during those little, ‘light’ sleeps?

Basic, intuitive information and alarmingly negative quotes about very young babies
November 15, 2018

I couldn’t make it past the third leap in this book, because I found the quotes from parents in each chapter so upsetting. The author reassures us that they are experiencing normal emotions. These are NOT normal feeling towards a very young baby (or any baby/child). From mothers “understanding how people could hit their children “ to a mother who threw her baby on the changing table to another who left her baby to scream it out for over two hours. These mothers are abusive and it is dangerous to quote them in parenting books as being normal. I’m horrified and still shaking even thinking about it.

I otherwise found the information in this book somewhat interesting but mostly very intuitive. All of the games and activities suggested for each stage are pretty obvious just through normal interactions with your baby. But still, I did find some new insights and was happy to have my intuition reinforced. If not for the horrible parenting quotes, I would probably finish the book and give it three stars.

So negative! Do not recommend
February 4, 2019

Like: a bit more detail about the leaps and what babies learn compared to the app

Dislike: really bizarre and negative quotes from real moms scattered throughout ie “I’m irritated by my son’s slow coordination” and “Today I found her standing in her crib for the first time, wailing. It irritates me.” That sort of crap is not helpful or even relevant, and I hope those mothers get the help they need because that’s a pretty dangerous way to think about a 6 month old and I think they might have PND.

Unsettling quotes from “real moms” aside, the language used by the authors to describe infants is often unnecessarily negative, as well. For example, this quote from the chapter on Leap 8: “… There are also little ones who don’t mind being put down, as long as their parents don’t walk away. The only one who’s allowed to walk away is the little terror themselves.” Now, calling an infant a “little terror” because she’s going through massive brain changes and is confused and frustrated and just wants a cuddle is completely nuts to me. What’s the point of learning about these leaps in development in our children if we aren’t doing so to be compassionate and meet their needs when they’re struggling?!

I really wanted to like this book because the app is so helpful, but the pessimistic tone is a real turn off for me. Really disappointing. I do not recommend this book at all.
