Abe Still Has It

First, the story. A convict is “cleared” by the Exoneration Initiative. He may, though, be factually guilty. He gets murdered. The father of his victim is the main suspect. Wes Farrell was the DA.who prosecuted the “exonoree.” The victim’s father retains Wes to defend him. Then the pace picks up. Dismas Hardy, Wes Farrell, and Gina Roarke authorize Abe Glitsky to investigate. Abe persists. Because he was formerly head of SFPD’s homicide squad, we thankfully avoid the all too common P.I. vs. . police conflict. Abe is relentless. Of course he solves the crime(s). The mystery is topical and interesting. Lescroart leaves some clues for the reader, but the “reveal” may be surprising. But the main reason I read this series and enjoy it so much is the fictional San Francisco and the wonderful, complex, engaging characters who inhabit that fictional universe. I’d read these books for the characterizations regardless of the legal/crime plot. But the legal/crime parts are great. One small quibble. The title Inspector instead of Detective is unique to SFPD. Lescroart inhabits other P. D. s with Inspectors. A quibble. But authenticity and research are important to me. Admittedly, a very small quibble in an otherwise great book.

They’re Back

Dismas, Frannie, Wes, and Abe are back! It’s been a long wait which the author explains in his “Acknowledgments” at the end of the book. The fun of reading a Lescroart book is knowing what to expect from the characters and seeing how they fit into the plot he develops. Ah, the plot. It has the usual murders, crooks and philanders but the motive of the killer is “the missing piece”. The author presents more than the usual number of ‘red herrings’ and spends more time on them than most books—but they are interesting diversions. For the most part, this is an Abe Glitsky book, an older Glitsky, but nevertheless the same Abe who follows leads wherever they may lead based on his cop’s intuition. Readers will still get the insiders’s tour of San Francisco as well as seeing the inner workings of the city’s justice system. The worst thing about the book is that it had to end. As usual, a great, entertaining read.
