More than just a free for all of

unbelievable acts, the character of David Rivers has heart, soul and mission minded integrity.
“The Enemy of My County” is book 1 in a 2 parter by Jason Kasper, that features his hero, David Rivers. It’s also my first book by Kasper and I was pleasantly surprised by the depth of characterization, pacing and plotting. I was expecting a Rambo like free for all, with unrealistic acts of physical impossibility and instead I found a much more compelling story.
David and his team are for sure hard core black-ops guys. The language is typical, but not gratuitous and there’s plenty of violence and military action. Once again, I was surprised at the restraint when it came to the descriptive factor, happily surprised. These guys are also an emotional bunch and by showing a full range of feelings, it was easier to get to know them and for the story to resonate; which it did.
There’s both a foreign and domestic component to this tale. Capital Hill, the Military and CIA, clash over who’s in charge, ultimatums, stones thrown, fingers pointed and a task still need doing while the grownups are slinging at each other missing the point; it’s like watching cable news. David and his team stay on task at times “coloring outside the lines” to get results.
When the story turns domestic it becomes more intense, higher energy and more personal. Perhaps that’s due to the family aspect or it’s the last half coming to a natural building for conclusion. In either case, I enjoyed it more. The action scenes are tight, dialogue is biting and the emotional drive for success ties all elements together.A well crafted thriller with an invitation waiting for volume 2, due in January ‘22📚

Reading the book was exhilarating, starting with David and his team’s HALO dive out of C-17 into Syria. The mission to take a new terrorist mastermind in the middle of ISIS held territories. The team continues on from place to place locate and terminate him, but also to recover a very large cache of specialized missiles with which he and his ISIS cohorts are moving to who knows where and for what purpose. It’s amazing to follow the details brought into his books as David and his team deal with new and harrowing situations in the pulsed search. I also love the humor between the team members, that always puts a smile on my face. And there was wee bit of moisture in the corners of my eyes as the book reached its crux, and the aftermath. One year until the next book in the series, already purchased. I highly recommend all of Jason’s books. Thank you again Jason!
The Enemies of My Country

Jason Kasper’s best book. It’s a sequel to his previous “American Mercenary” series, but it stands on its own you don’t need to have read that series to understand this book. Unlike the “American Mercenary” series, with some of its more surreal and unlikely elements, “Enemies of My Country” is firmly rooted in reality and is a more conventional action thriller in the mold of Flynn and Thor, but far superior, better written and way more realistic. The portrayal of a CIA hit team, the tactics and politics surrounding such a team, feel real and authentic, but that’s just a bonus for those who enjoy that type of thing. The characters and dialogue are especially well done and are what keep the pages turning.
Oh, and speaking of the aforementioned Flynn and Thor, Kapser makes a hilarious Mitch Rapp reference that calls out one of the most ridiculous tropes of this genre that unfortunately persists to this day. Thankfully, it does not appear that David Rivers will be on a first name basis with POTUS anytime soon.
Kasper’s writing is grounded and believable, and that makes the story a far more immersive experience. This book is one of those gems that I cannot praise enough.
