The Authors

Ichiro Kishimi was born in Kyoto, where he currently resides. “A Book That Could Change Your Life”

Remarkable book explains the philosophical tenets of the famous psychologist, Alfred Adler, by a back and forth dialogue between a youth and an older, philosopher gentleman. Unlike other giants in the field of psychology, Adler did not believe past trauma affects one’s ability to be happy in the present. Adler taught the importance of liking oneself, contributing to community, appreciating another for just “being,” accepting the fact that out of say, 10 people, one will really like you, two will dislike you, seven will be neutral and the important thing is to be yourself; not try to be other than yourself; concentrate on the one who likes you and not try win over others. Thus the title: “The Courage to Be Disliked.” Adler proposed that one is happier and freer if they live”moments to moments, “working on one’s own task in life and not doing other peoples’ tasks. .

This book is beyond incredible. All you need to know, is that if you are like me, you are incredibly skeptical of “popular” “self-help” books. I am a student of philosophy, so trying to figure out things like “what is happiness” has occupied so much of my time, that the idea that a truly effective way to live for oneself and be happy can be condensed into such a readable, yet densely packed book, seems impossible.

Yet this book pulls it off, and more. You will be challenged by it — not reading it, but the ideas. You will want to run away, call it lofty mumbo-jumbo, whatever. Just stick with it. It will be worth it, I absolutely promise. A tad reductive

“Denying trauma” is a misleading phrase, and rightly so: I can see why it might upset many readers. A better description would be “Deal with trauma and move on productively.” Traumas come in all flavors and types, as do personalities. I like Adler’s emphasis on moving forward, being of service, and not manipulating others with anger, but trauma is not something one recovers from overnight. It takes time. Act yourself into a new way of thinking and live life instead of obsessing over it. Actually, the best piece of advice is in the title: The Courage to Be Disliked, which is why I bought it. Too many of us fret over criticism and want to please everyone, which is never wise. Indeed, I wish the author had spent more time on the benefits of a “disagreeable personality.” Try David Reynold’s books on Morita Therapy: there’s a bit more meat on the bones. Wish I would have just picked up a book on Adlerian Psychology

I understand why the authors chose a dialogue format, but it didn’t work very well. Half of the youth’s responses consisted of the last line or phrase the philosopher used with a question mark slapped on the end, which was infuriating. That’s not realistic dialogue. I would have preferred the philosopher going on an endless rant. The youth also gave in too easily to the philosopher’s points for them to be convincing. The examples used either by the philosopher to illustrate his points or the youth to refute them were either too specific(leading to many “Well, what if”s in my mind) or too vague to really drive the point home
