DANIEL M. DAVIS is Professor of Immunology at the University of Manchester. An Immunological Tale replete with Mysteries, Discoveries, Science and Imagination

Daniel M. Davis (PhD-Physics) is a University of Manchester immunologist whose research involves studying immune cells under some of the most advanced optical microscopes ever made. Every research paper and presentation is packed with visuals. The book, however, is devoid of images, save the dust jacket of the Canadian edition that includes a partial image of an antigen presenting cell.

The study of immunology has recently lead to a large and quickly growing array of medicines that are changing how modern medicine is practiced. Professor Davis tells us the story (punctuated by more than 600 reference numbers) of how this came to be, from the early vaccination experiments hundreds of years ago to the recent use of Thalidomide as an immune system modifier keeping his own father’s cancer at bay. He is a wonderful guide into the world of scientific discovery and how an open mind is difficult to attain, yet perhaps essential to scientific achievement. He describes how he came to understand why a physicist like himself would be recruited for medical research. He also covers the politics of science, how some of today’s giants of immunology were previously ridiculed by colleagues for their work, but have since been proven to be on the right track.

Any good book on science will cover discoveries that receive the Nobel prize. This reader suspects that Professor Davis is not alone in his fascination with the prize winners, their achievements and their failures. But nowadays there are other ways for a researcher to be wildly successful, like James Allison and Padmanee Sharma, both with a net worth of tens of millions of dollars after the launch of Jounce Therapeutics company.
