The Authors

TCR recognition is tightly regulated to trigger sensitive but balanced T cell responses that result in the effective elimination of the pathogens while minimizing collateral damage to the host. The sensitivity of TCR recognition has to be properly tempered to prevent unintended activation by self-peptide–MHC complexes that cause autoimmune diseases. It is likely that once the TCR is engaged by a peptide– MHC and TCR signaling begins, additional regulatory mechanisms, involving other receptors, would increase the fidelity of the response. Such mechanisms that interpret TCR recognition within physiological settings may provide excellent targets for selective manipulation of immune responses, either enhancing or sup- pressing the immunity. However, the study of T cell activation under physiological conditions faces many technical challenges.

 Part memoir, part motivational guide

May 17, 2022

This book is divided into three main parts, with 16 chapters, and a total of about 315 pages.

In the Foreword, Joe Rogan talks about his respect for the dedication, determination and sheer willpower of Cam Hanes. He highlights some of Hanes’ remarkable achievements, and how Hanes has inspired him to keep pushing himself.

Hanes starts the book by describing his introduction to bowhunting in the Prologue, and then begins Chapter 1 with his childhood and early love of running. He explains that his father was an elite athlete and celebrated track star in Oregon, and this likely contributed to young Hanes pushing himself to keep running. Running a mile a day at age five is obviously not normal, and just a few pages into this book you start to understand how Hanes has achieved such feats of endurance in his life.

At the end of each chapter, there is a “Callout” section. These sections are usually a few pages long, and are more focused on motivational words, as opposed to the regular chapters that are more of a memoir. Throughout the book there are also dozens of black-and-white photos of Hanes and his family over the years, usually with captions explaining the picture.

Throughout the rest of the book Hanes follows this pattern, alternating between memoir chapters that describe the events in his life and motivational “Callout” sections. He covers his battle with alcoholism, including multiple accidents and fights. He explains how becoming a father changed him, and what he learned from friends like Roy Roth. He shares lessons learned in the wilderness stalking his prey, and lessons learned while trying to become a successful writer.

Overall I really enjoyed reading this. Hanes includes many inspirational quotes throughout the book, and they help add to this unique combination of autobiography and motivational guide. Whether you are a fan of bowhunting or not, it is hard to argue with the fact Hanes is a legendary endurance athlete. I appreciate Hanes sharing these stories about the forces that helped shape him into such a determined and focused person, and his motivational “Callouts” are a powerful way to inspire you to
