After reading this DASH Diet weight loss program/cookbook and trying several recipes, I’ve put together a list of pros and cons followed by my overall thoughts.
-Starts with an accurate and easy to read overview on the DASH diet
-Uses positive messages and evidence based recommendations for weight loss
-Provides several example meal plans and exercise plans
-Includes shopping lists and meal prep lists for the weekly meal plans
-The meals and snacks laid out in the meal plans look appetizing
-Recipes don’t include hard to find ingredients
-Recipes are tasty
-Includes nutrition information and amount of servings (though the serving size is not always listed)
-Includes substitution, cooking, and variation tips for each recipe to suite a range of preferences
-Includes ideas on how to make the dish a complete meal if it isn’t already a “meal in one”
-Includes the best way to store and reheat leftovers for the recipes
-The shopping lists, especially for the first meal plan, are extensive (and expensive) which can easily overwhelm the reader
-Doesn’t include many photos (only 8 to be exact) of the 100 recipes
-Some of the recipes are actually moderate in sodium content and if not a “meal in one” can become a high sodium meal if paired with a suggestion like “serve with soup or half sandwich” to make it a meal
-Some snacks in the example meal plans are really more like desserts than they are snacks due to the amount of added sugars in the recipes
-Added sugars are not included in the nutrition information
-A handful of vegetable sides are oddly bundled together in the dessert and snack chapter
Overall, I enjoyed reading this and trying the recipes. I believe this book could be useful for many people looking to improve their health and also for health professionals that recommend the DASH Diet to their patients. Reducing the amount of salt and added sugars by 25% in many of the recipes would make this cookbook more DASH friendly without compromising too much flavor.
