Used to Punishing Yourself? This Book is for YOU.

June 11, 2018

I began reading Self-Compassion two days ago and I am astonished. Astounded. I cannot believe that in all my years of extensive, detailed therapy not one of my excellent therapists ever recommended these exercises.

I am Bipolar with Histrionic tendencies and have struggled all my life with my self-image and an eating disorder. Guilt has always been my default emotion. Shame. All the things that one stuffs down with food. Or alcohol. Or shopping. Or any reckless, impulsive behavior meant to stuff feelings down so we DON’T FEEL them. And when I don’t feel my feelings, I PUNISH myself. This has been going on all my life.

This book is changing my entire outlook, without confusing me or SCARING me to death. This is because it is so straightforward and common sense. I feel Empowered. And almost Brave.

This does not read as a medical/scientific text and I tend to be highly skeptical about these sorts of books. However, with this book I find few, if any, intellectual objections to the manner in which it is written or in how the studies and source material are not cited until the “notes” at the end. (This seems to be increasingly common and I often find it hard to stick with a book when the author is not forthcoming with sources within the text itself.)

But in this case, I am not bothered the lack of in-text acknowledgement of source material because there’s really not anything to OBJECT TO or call into question within the text. All of the advice is sound. I’ve not read anything (so far) that is harmful or suspect.

The exercises are so simple and the advice will set your brain to sparking, esp. if you have a spiritual bent as do I.

I am eager to work my way through the rest of the book and am pacing myself so that I don’t do too much at once. I will check back in when I am finished.

 Transformative

May 27, 2018

This book had a very transformative effect on my life. Although I had trouble with my anxiety, as an analytical overthinking kind of person, I needed a very valid reason to convince myself out of my suffering and anxiety. This book along with a therapist has replaced so much of my suffering with both Joy and compassion.

It made such a difference on me that I gave a talk to 85 young adults on the subject to help them see what I saw from this book. Thanks Kristen.

Not a good fit for some people

July 7, 2018

The book seems to be helpful for some people, but if you’re trying the exercises and they don’t resonate well with you, it doesn’t offer a lot of advice on where to go next. It seems very one-size-fits-all. If you have a bad history with treacly condescension or people looking down on you, being told to pet yourself and call yourself poor darling can have negative effects, and there isn’t a lot of advice on why that can happen or how to handle it. I made a sincere effort, worked the exercises and got a quarter of the way through the book before concluding that it was having a negative impact on my mental state, and quit.

 Life changing

November 23, 2015

At age 66 and just retired, I was not sure I could learn much from a book that would truly impact my life. Happily, I was wrong. Kristen Neff has presented a clear and compelling description of self-compassion. It affirms much of my life experience up to now. From her book, I have learned new ways of thinking and being. I am hereby resetting my sails and, with renewed enthusiasm, setting off into the future, and the final chapters in my life. I am more open to what is, grateful for my strengths, able to savor life’s pleasures a little more. I see myself connected with all other humans facing challenges that inevitably come along the way. I imagine I will return to this book m
