I am disappointed by this product
May 9, 2020

Pros:
– It’s a textbook with information in it. A good, general overview of various things.
– I thought it was easy to make it through the info, which was good to get me started on studying.
– I think the layout, format, and readability is pretty good.
– It was nice to use the study schedule as a general guide.
– Some of the chapter review questions are useful.
– There are some useful tables with good information.

Cons: (errors, non-comprehensive, simplistic information)
*If the authors would like to correct me on any of this, I am happy to receive feedback.

-The questions online seem very simplistic or repetitive. Sure, there are some occasional good ones, but most of the time I feel like I’m wasting my time. There are some typos or errors in some of them.
-I can’t be certain but I believe some of the questions may be wrong in their answer. For example, one question said that the scapulohumeral rhythm only occurs in mid range humeral flexion. The rationale stated that only the humerus moves during early and late flexion. This is not true, as far as I know. It occurs during the whole range.
-There are a number of errors in the chapter review questions that I noticed. When I checked on the website they do have a document pointing out some of the errors, but if you do not happen to notice them, you may study the wrong thing.
-There are some other errors in the book I noticed, like splint pictures being mislabeled.
-In the beginning of the book, the author refers to tips from students. Things like: knowing the Rancho and Glasgow Coma Scales. If you look in the book, these scales are mentioned, but the scales are not actually included. If I’m studying a book, I’d like the information to be in it, rather than having to look online or in another textbook.
-Brunnstrom stages and Modified ashworth scale are not included. They are mentioned, but the actual scales are important to know.
– Allen cognitive is also mentioned, but not detailed. Again, this is an important piece of info to know.
-They use the term ‘Mental Retardation’ in a question. This is not a term that should be used today.

I’m just a student studying to become an OT, so if I’ve noticed these issues, then the authors should have. They are the experts. The number of errors means that someone did not proofread fully, both the text and online questions. This is an important test and the presence of more than a few errors is inexcusable. At the end of the day, I’ve learned a bit from this book, but I wish I had spent my limited money on another book or resource.

Great Resource!!
July 13, 2020

This book is an excellent resource to use when preparing to take the national board exam. The authors did a great job in organizing content that’s easy to follow for readers. The quality of the content is great – concepts are discussed in way that’s easy to understand while still providing the depth of content that’s needed to do well on the exam. Each area of content addresses things like etiology & pathology, clinical presentation, screening & assessment tools used, and various interventions used. A lot of charts are used to help simply and organize information, which I found to be very useful. At the end of each chapter there are several helpful self-study activities and practice questions provided – not only are there multiple-choice questions, but also written recall & application-based questions.

In addition to providing great quality content, the authors have provided helpful tips regarding various study tools and other materials for exam prep. Also, the sample study calendar is nice to have as a reference. I found it challenging in determining where to really start studying – the calendar can be used as a guide in how to break down content so that you don’t overwhelm yourself. Oh, and the online test prep is a great way to get in some additional practice. Lots of practice questions that have rationales provided to help better understand the reasoning behind each question. Overall, would most definitely recommend!!

Good tool, needs a little help
October 13, 2020

I liked it but didn’t love it! I really liked the organized format and found that helpful to have a set plan for each day. It was good for an overview. I went through this book first to help me narrow down what I needed to study more and then I used that info to help me prioritize what to study in the Therapy Ed book. It was a good tool and it helped me pass my test, but I definitely wouldn’t use it without other supplemental material.
(Also the online pretest answers were not always accurate!!)

Errors in practice exams
August 15, 2018

I really like the layout of this book but it’s not very reliable. I have encountered many grammatical errors and incorrect answers/rationales in the online exam when I cross reference with other books. The content of the book seems to be accurate but I would not trust the practice exams/rationals

Multiple errors, great organization
December 28, 2017

While this book is well organized and provides an access to the online prep test tool which includes more than 1000 questions with explaination, there are multiple errors in answers of online questions and their explainations. As a student, this is quite concerning and it is my hope that the publisher would correct the errors in the online questions and let the users know which errors are corrected.

Well organized and easy to follow
April 16, 2019

I used this book during my OT program as well as one of my main study resources for the NBCOT exam and passed on my first attempt! This book is easy to read and you don’t feel overwhelmed with information, there are tips and helpful information that make you feel confident in your knowledge skills along the way! There are great reviews to test your knowledge at the end of the chapters that make you actually think and apply the information you just learned into clinical situations/case studies. I would highly recommend this book as a resource!

Great study source for the NBCOT exam
March 31, 2019

My main study source was the 45 days and counting book! It truly helped me prepare for the real exam and pass on my first attempt! I found this book to be one of the best study tools for the NBCOT exam! The book is structured in a way to make studying easy and not overwhelming like Therapy Ed. The online practice questions are very helpful and they come with rationales! I highly recommend this book for passing the NBCOT exam!

Great resource!
January 19, 2020

As a new OTR, I would highly recommend this book for anyone preparing for the NBCOT!! It was so helpful, and not overwhelming! I didn’t follow the study plan/timeline given in the book, but used it to further understand topics I had learned about in class.
