This enchanting gallery was personally selected by Christopher Tolkien who, through detailed notes on the sources for each picture, provides unique insight into the artistic vision of his father, J.R.R. Tolkien.

Gorgeous book with amazing images about Elf’s life. This book worth much higher price in my opinion. I feel lucky getting it so inexpensive and brand new. Wrapped in plastic and paper smell of this new book is so amazing. Thank you.

Gorgeous but scattered with typos
December 5, 2021

This is a gorgeously produced book, with a beautiful and sturdy slip cover, and high resolution art within. Christopher Tolkien did solid, painstaking work to accurately describe the origin and purpose of each picture.
However, there are an uncomfortable amount of typos in the book, especially for how little text appears, which you’d think would have been caught after so many versions.

Beautiful!
December 12, 2021

Just beautiful! Coffee table book in slipcase. This is all the artwork from six Calendars from the 1970s, with brief descriptions by Christopher Tolkien. Many have both the original B&W sketches and the finished colored work actually used. (Colors mostly rendered by another artist.) Includes a few pieces from the Sim book editions, and one from the Letters from Santa.

It’s a great book. Well made!
January 24, 2022

Though I haven’t looked deeply into the book what I have seen has been excellent! The book is hard back inserted in a sturdy sleave. I would recommend it to any Tolkien fan to add to their collection.

Perfect for the Tolkien collector
December 15, 2017

The best version of this you can buy. After trying to track down each book individually and being shocked at the $50+ price tag per book I was so happy to find this older collection. What’s the difference? Nothing. This set contains the Hobbit and LOTR Trilogy with the exact same recordings as any new set you would buy today. The difference is this one comes in a beautiful Alan Lee designed lenticular box set perfect for the Tolkien fan. Other sets just come in generic CD cases. Side note, it is amazing to hear a young Ian holm play Frodo and Billy Nighy as Samwise!!

Beautiful book, printed upside down… (updated)
February 23, 2022

Updated review. 3 stars to 4.
First received this beautiful book with all the pages printed upside down. I received a replacement the very next day, thank you amazon! The book is beautiful and the pages are the proper way this time. My only complaint is one of the corners is slightly damaged and some typos throughout. Nonetheless, a lovely book and great addition to my bookshelf.

Excellent, but far from complete
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 11, 2021

Unlike every review at the time of writing, this IS a review for the reprint of Pictures by JRRT, and not a wrongly attached review of Roverandum.

It is very nicely produced in a slipcase. The book itself makes it abundantly clear that this is not intended as a complete, or even comprehensive, edition of Tolkien’s pictures. The intent was just to collect together all the pictures by Tolkien published in a series of calendars in the 1970s. I do wish that the publishers had made that clear in the description of the book, here. I would probably still have bought it, though I would not have felt quite so disappointed as I did when first picking it up. They might also have stressed that a significant number of black and white pictures have been coloured by someone else – a Mr H. E. Riddett, of whom I am entirely ignorant, though they do show the originals, somewhat smaller, facing the coloured versions. Again, such things should be stated in the description on these pages, not left for the buyer to find out when reading the foreward.

As it happens, I have most, but probably not quite all of these pictures elsewhere, but usually much smaller and, if the book blurb is to be believed, not with such accurate reproduction of the colours

Almost perfect
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 13, 2021

In some Eastern philosophies there is a principle that only a deity can be perfect therefore there must be a blemish left in all human works. With the 2021 Slipcased Version this is to be found in the text of picture 6 (Rivendell) at line 7 which should say “where” not “were”. The remainder of the book appears to have been updated and corrected from earlier publications. Christopher Tolkien amended some of his earlier interpretations in the previous issue and now the publishers have corrected the colour reproduction of the illustrations. It is not going to get any better so buy this work now while there are still some available.
Although Christopher Tolkien’s other more involved books set out matters at far greater length his paragraphs with each of these illustrations show where each fits into the overall corpus of his father’s work and explains where J R R Tolkien himself changed his mind between doing the painting and finalising the original books.

A beautiful collection of Tolkien’s works
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 28, 2021

I purchased this as a gift. It arrived shrink wrapped and as described, however there was a scuff on one corner. After messaging Amazon, they quickly sent out a replacement and I sent the old one back without any issue.

This one arrived in perfect condition. This is a great gift for a Tolkien fan- it’s beautifully illustrated inside and feels beautiful quality. I would recommend.

Beautiful edition
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 21, 2021

A lovely new edition with an updated foreward. Since I don’t have the earlier editions, I can’t comment on the improvement claimed for the reproductions, but they do look good. While most of these images have been seen elsewhere, this is a nice compilation with notes by Christopher Tolkien, including the calling out of some curious repurposing of earlier work. Note that this collection is solely based upon images used in various Tolkien-themed calendars issues in the 1970s, and is therefore not in any way comprehensive. The book “Tolkien: Maker of Middle-earth” encompasses far more of his work.
