Dr. Richard S. Williams serves as the Chief Health and Medical Officer for the National Aeronautics
and Space Administration. As the Chief Health and Medical Officer, Dr. Williams is responsible for
the oversight of all medical aspects of all national and international NASA missions involving
humans. A Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and is certified by the American Board of
Surgery and the American Board of Preventive Medicine (Aerospace Medicine). He has extensive
experience in the clinical practice of both general surgery and aerospace medicine as well as in
administrative medical management. He has held appointments as Assistant Clinical Professor of
Surgery at Wright State University and Associate Clinical Professor of Surgery at the Medical
College of Virginia. As a military officer, Dr. Williams served his country as Commander of the 1st
Air Transportable Hospital in Saudi Arabia during Operation DESERT STORM. His military
decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, the Air Force Meritorious Service Medal with oak leaf
cluster, the Army Commendation Medal and the Air Force Achievement Med
