Attributes of Alcohol and the Liver PDF

The topic of alcohol and the liver is long overdue for re-evaluation. The authors of this book have clearly taken up this challenge. Human interest in alcohol dates back to the Neolithic period (circa 10,000 BC). Only a small amount of alcohol is found naturally in food. Therefore, humans have yet to adapt to the high quantities of alcohol consumed daily by alcohol abusers. Alcohol is a simple carbohydrate and is metabolised as a fuel. However, unlike more naturally occurring carbohydrates such as glucose, the pathways for its metabolism are not subject to the same checks and balances. Ethanol oxidation reduces NAD+, which starves reactions that depend on this substrate. This accounts for the accumulation of fat in alcoholic steatosis. Alcohol metabolism generates significant amounts of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which damages mtDNA and subsequently mitochondrial integrity. The authors provide several lines of evidence that link the clinical picture of alcoholic liver disease with mitochondrial damage. Other important topics highlighted in this book include histo-pathological aspects of the disease. Clinical assessment of nutrition and vitamin supplementation is addressed as well. The book concludes with the highly topical and controversial aspect of liver transplantation in patients with alcoholic liver disease. Alcohol and the Liver PDF

Hypertension guidelines correct

The hypertension classification has been updated. The above comment doesn’t reflect the edition I have.

Error in hypertension classification
March 23, 2019

Book looks good. A bit disappointed that a 2019 edition still hasn’t updated its hypertension classification, in which a systolic BP > 130 mmHg is already considered hypertension in the new guidelines. I wonder what else hasn’t been updated.

UPDATE: I had a problem with the kindle edition getting updated shortly after it was released. The updated version does include the updated hypertension guidelines. So far so good!

For a thorough review and preparation for Step 2
September 7, 2019

Purchased September 5th, 2019. Beautiful, great for Step 2! Just don’t forget to study Psyche, Surgery, Pediatrics, Ob-Gyn, etc. because this book only contains medicine. See the included photo of HTN to clear up any confusion to whether or not to book is updated.

I like it!
January 21, 2020

I am a PA student and I like this book overall because it gives more detail into conditions and provides “quick hits” of high yield info which I find very helpful! My only wish is that it was more specific with antibiotic treatments. Sometimes it just says “treat with antibiotics.” I’d prefer if it lists the recommended antibiotics or class. But still, I would recommend this book as a great addition.

nice quick reference or for board study
July 23, 2020

I used this to study for boards a couple years ago and found that it had just enough info for review without getting to in depth. I recently transitioned from specialty into primary care and purchased the new edition just to keep on hand for quick review.

Good help for shelf
March 11, 2022

I used this as reference when doing OME videos and annotated while doing questions and it really helped integrate the information for me. It’s not super detailed so it wasn’t a perfect reference during rotations but a good help for studying the basics. Very first aid style quick facts
