 Brilliant Coben Novel.

A brilliant read and a sequel to The Boy From The Woods. I love that this has some recurring characters like Hester Crimstein and also a character from another book (The Stranger). Makes me feel like a member of a club! *Spoilers* Although this is a book about Wilde and his search for his roots and background, it includes people from reality TV shows, DNA Family History Websites, missing people, murders, liars, the FBI, US Marshalls, and a group of shadowy people who have set themselves up as clandestine internet police. It’s twisty and turny and I always have the Coben dilemma of read too fast and finish too soon. I thoroughly recommend this book.

What has happened to Mr Coben?

Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 25, 2022

A new Harlan Coben book used to be a cause for celebration, but the halcyon days of Myron Bolitar and Win have long since gone. This new book starts quite promisingly, but quickly descends into absolute nonsense. Wilde, in the first book, was an interesting character but, in this one, is shallow, self-absorbed and showing no special attributes. Mr Coben seems to have thought “reality tv, online trolls and DNA – how can I put them all together?”. The answer is that he can’t. The plot is ludicrous and the characters are simply unbelievable. A complete waste of time and money.

Kept causing the kindle app to crash

Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 7, 2022

I don’t know if it was just the book, but if I tried to go back to re-read something, the app kept crashing out. Now the app has become unusable. I don’t know if this book caused it. But it was while reading this book that the app became unusable. I’ve tried uninstalling and reinstalling but that made it worse. And it’s impossible to contact for help as they offer no phone number and their written “help” decides what questions you’re allowed to ask.

A good book but not as good as his previous ones

Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 7, 2022

I was a little disappointed with this book as having read all his other books I was expecting a bit more.
maybe its the story line, we have met Wild before but the story centres on DNA testing being the main way to solve the case. I found it slow and to be honest boring in places.

“All humans are bad. Most of us merely live our lives with our worst, most unethical acts lying like bodies clad in concrete, undiscovered, quiet, and dark.” – A Certain Hunger.

Food critic Dorothy Daniels loves what she does. Discerning, meticulous, and very, very smart, Dorothy’s clear mastery of the culinary arts make it likely that she could, on any given night, whip up a more inspired dish than any one of the chefs she writes about. Dorothy loves sex as much as she loves food, and while she has struggled to find a long-term partner that can keep up with her, she makes the best of her single life, frequently traveling from Manhattan to Italy for a taste of both. But there is something within Dorothy that’s different from everyone else, and having suppressed it long enough, she starts to embrace what makes Dorothy uniquely, terrifyingly herself. Recounting her life from a seemingly idyllic farm-to-table childhood, the heights of her career, to the moment she plunges an ice pick into a man’s neck on Fire Island, Dorothy Daniels show us what happens when a woman finally embraces her superiority.

What a month to read this book! Buddy reading this book with others made it so fun. As you can tell from the synopsis above, it is not a light read and it is fairly graphic. However, the writing is beautiful and quite poetic for such a read! I think this is an amazing debut with such an interesting, albeit unlikeable, main character. However, I was fascinated by Dorothy’s story and how she arrived at her present state. Needless to say, I’m definitely excited for another book from this author.
