i was advised by colleagues to use both M .Beattie’s books during my preparation for the MRCPCH step 1 and they did not prove wrong ! The books give you an idea of what to expect on the exam in terms of format, structure and difficulty , as well as learning to recognize and handle trick questions . The answers given are very comprehensive ( to the point of being exhaustive at times) and represent a good summary of the subject dealt with on the question although i wouldn’t recommend relying solely on them for studying but rather using them as an adjunct to it.
Definitely highly recommended to anyone preparing for MRCPCH!

Good book
I love this textbook

I love this textbook, it is clearly written and it has both intermediate and advanced material broken down into various chapters. I used it for advanced microbiology Fall of 2016 and the previous edition for the introductory course three years ago. It has a great retrovirus section, bacteriology, up-to-date material, excellent depictions and the online material is many times better than its predecessor. I highly recommend buying this book new, it’s worth every penny for undergraduate, graduate or medical school. It even helped for MCAT studies. The diagrams are excellent and it’s very easily to read 25-30 pages without difficulty or prior microbiology knowledge, but later on it does get into advanced subjects and goes into more detail. However it eases you in, instead of just throwing you into the deep water so to speak. Excellent read!

Needed this for my medical micro class. Used it mostly as a reference. The front of the chapter includes a helpful breakdown and even questions to help you brainstorm cases. The diagrams on parasite infections are exceptionally helpful, but the actual text can be hard to read. Its easily broken down into categories: pathology, disease, laboratory, treatment, prevent. Just the text tends to be much more dense and slightly confusing at times. I only used it as a reference really. Much more efficient to read the overview and then just read what you don’t understand.

I love that this text comes with a digital version that I can access anywhere with internet. I could complete the readings for class on the train or right before class without carrying around heavy textbooks. I love the logical breakdown of topics. It is well written and easy to read.
