Gerard J. Tortora is Professor of Biology and former Coordinator at Bergen Community College in Paramus, NJ, where he teaches human anatomy and physiology as well as microbiology. He received his bachelor’s degree in biology from Fairleigh Dickinson University and his master’s degree in science education from Montclair State College. He is a member of many professional organizations, such as the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS), the American Society of Microbiology (ASM), American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), National Education Association (NEA), and the Metropolitan Association of College and University Biologists (MACUB).

Above all, Jerry is devoted to his students and their aspirations. In recognition of this commitment, Jerry was the recipient of MACUB’s 1992 President’s Memorial Award. In 1996, he received a National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) excellence award from the University of Texas and was selected to represent Bergen Community College in a campaign to increase awareness of the contributions of community colleges to higher education. Jerry is also the author of several best-selling science textbooks and laboratory manuals, a calling that often requires an additional 40 hours per week beyond his teaching responsibilities.

Reading this on kindle is the worst

This is not reader-friendly, kindle is the worst for textbooks. I need to scroll, and on PC I do not have this option. My trouble is with not the book. Had I known this was not student-friendly, would have purchased it on Pearson. has so much money, you would think they put it to make a better kindle.

The textbook itself is not the worst book out there.

Kindle version: Not entirely useful – poorly formatted

The Kindle version of the textbook is improperly formatted, resulting in awkward blank spaces, mis-labeled figures, tables and incomplete explanations. The 4 attached images are from the first few pages alone. Adjusting settings did NOT remedy any of the issues identified in this review. While the Kindle version might save you significant amounts of money, it’s not the way to go. Spring for one of the other options. Too bad!

Easy to understand

I love this book. I have trouble understanding some of the processes throughout Biology. This book is written so it’s easier to understand. Its undergraduate level. I had initially rented it through , but I loved it so much I returned the rented book and bought one I could keep forever.

I needed this book for my microbiology class. I’m happy I could it find it cheaper on compared to my college bookstore. The book was brand new and wrapped in plastic when I got it. The only con is that it does not come with the software unless you order the bundle and the bundle is just way too expensive.

Purchased a new book and really can’t return it I am in the middle of the semester but as I was flipping through the back of this new book the pages are torn/have holes in them and a few of the pages are not attached to the book. The front cover has bubbles.The product does not appear to be new. Truly disappointed after spending so much on a book.

I finally received my book. It was packed and brand new despite getting to me with a couple of days delay. I’m just happy to have my book I didn’t except to see a brand new one since it was half the price. So happy with my purchase 🙂

Needed this book for class, as I’m not a fan of eBooks. The book was brought new. Once opening the box I noticed that the book has some dents in the cover. One the third day of class, the book fell from the desk and the pages broke away from the spine, so it doesn’t hold up well.

Super happy I revived it in one day but that’s it. The reason I bought a hard copy is so I could be a little rough with it….I spent almost $200.00 for it to come pre-damaged. I don’t think that’s fair. Most students resell their books and with the level of damage I would be lucky to get a quarter of what I spent.
