Simple wisdom and gentle humor, a book to TREASURE AND SHARE with all.
April 1, 2019

I am as happy now as these fuzzy wuzzy creatures! I have two—three—perhaps four new friends with no names but plenty of imagination and lasting childlike wisdom! Oh, and that fourth friend who pops in on the last page makes me want the sequel very soon. What a most clever “trick” to whet the appetite and imagination!

It took me only 10 minutes to take in the simple words and the vibrant illustrations in this book. It took me at least 20 minutes to read it a second time. Why? Because I took long pauses and breaths and inner laughs. I’d laugh out loud but my wife and cat are sound asleep at this hour—just past midnight.

Now these characters and their (not) friends are rolling around like bumpkins in my mind. They exude what friends are all about, not always agreeing or getting along, and perhaps suffering a few mishaps from the others, but “best friends” nonetheless.

I’ve also checked into other books by this most inventive and expressive duo of author and illustrator. Just as I loved being in Dr. Seuss’ world of joy and some ridiculousness, this new world is my next planet of bouncy joy.

Just so much youthful humor and lasting unpretentious wisdom—more each time I read this book. YES! I recommend this world to all the kids in your life – who I hope, like me, you’re one of them! And for ages from cradle to whatever age I am.

Great book for discussing social nuances with young kids
April 2, 2019

I’ve been looking for a book to help my kindergartner navigate the “you’re my best friend” and “you’re NOT my friend anymore” world of toddlerhood. My kindergartner has been very sensitive about it at school, and I couldn’t figure out how to speak on the subject in a meaningful way for a 4 yr old. Every book I’d find spoke of bullying, but really the issue is inclusion. So, I’m so grateful (and even relieved) to have found this book. Some mention how sparse the language is, but I think it’s perfect to allow parents to react to the images with their children. I’m able to ask, “have you ever felt like this character?” And I love how the roles reverse. Perfect book on the social aspects of friendship for very young kids. Sending a big thank you to the author and illustrator!

To short
April 1, 2019

Illustration good, teaching, learning good idea. Just to short 3 minute read. No meat. My kids would read once and miss the lesson only because it is in and out as fast as it came. Nothing to bring them back to read it again.

Could have been great
April 1, 2019

Only the additional comments of the reader could make this a success. First the dancing needs to be updated to the dances young kids would do today. Then there needs to be more distance between the pair and the one left out and more dramatic sadness, followed by stronger portrayal of awareness and reconciliation. With the transitions on facing pages, there’s not enough emphasis of feelings, not a place to insert questions for the listener before the page turn.

For the young ones, playing in a group doesn’t come naturally
May 4, 2019

They could have named this, ‘three’s a crowd’ because it’s about two creatures (who are like kids) who play together happily, then are joined by a third and things get a little awkward. They rotate playing in pairs, but the third one is always unhappy. Then the pairs switch off, and again, the new third person isn’t happy. And so it goes. They get into a discussion over who’s friends with who, and argue over what games to play, and there’s always someone who feels left out. Finally, they seem to have figured out how to make it work and they are all friends, when a fourth creature approaches and asks to join. Ack! This is for the youngest ones who are just learning to play together. It’s realistic because, despite one’s best efforts, playing in a group is tricky. Unfortunately it doesn’t really provide solutions. Still, this is an introduction to the social skills at the most basic level. Some kids will definitely benefit from seeing the difficulties of group play explained, and parents can play a role in exploring social skills with them.
