One of the undisputed heavyweight champions of American comedy, with nineteen appearances on the Johnny Carson show, thirteen HBO specials, five Grammys, and a critical Supreme Court battle over censorship under his belt, George Carlin saw it all throughout his extraordinary fifty-year career, and made fun of most of it. Last Words is the story of the man behind some of the most seminal comedy of the last half century, blending his signature acerbic humor with never-before-told stories from his own life, including encounters with a Who’s Who of 1970s celebrity—from Lenny Bruce to Hugh Hefner—and the origins of some of his most famous standup routines. Carlin’s early conflicts, his long struggle with substance abuse, his turbulent relationships with his family, and his triumphs over catastrophic setbacks all fueled the unique comedic worldview he brought to the stage. From the heights of stardom to the low points few knew about, Last Words is told with the same razor-sharp wit and unblinking honesty that made Carlin one of the best-loved comedians in American history

The BEST Memoir from the Comedy Genius himself: George Carlin….

June 15, 2020

“Last Words” is, by far the greatest memoir I have ever read that explains the comic genius behind it’s author, the late, great George Carlin. Written right before he died in 2008, he tells of his childhood, growing up in New York City (as alluded to on “Class Clown”), his start in stand-up comedy and evolution from Prime Time & Late Night television to the great albums & HBO specials from 1972 till 2008. He also discusses frankly his problems with substance abuse and recovery, as well as his massive heart attack, which was a key factor to his major approach to his act in later years.

One thing I LOVED in this book was his writing out some of the best and memorable pieces from the albums and explaining how he came up with them and how they made such an impact on this career. He bares ALL in this book and by reading it, you’ll get the idea of why George Carlin was one of the most revolutionary comedians of our generation.

This book is an amazing parting gift George Carlin has left us. After decades of making us laugh with his wry insights into the human condition, Carlin pulls back the curtain and lets into his most intimate, unguarded moments. These are the moments that contributed to his outlook and his routines. And they make up an epiphany. Business troubles, drug troubles, heart troubles…it is amazing that Carlin was able to persevere through it all. And in this, his final book, he tells us what it was like first-hand, warts and all. This is not a compilation of his stand-up bits; there are plenty of those (and I’m not dismissing them – they are among my favorite books). Rather, this book is the culmination of nearly fifteen years of collaborative work with the fabulous Tony Hendra (of Father Joe fame) to document George’s life in words. And, in so doing, to make us think – what else would you expect from a book by George Carlin?

Hendra completed the book after Carlin’s death, and his deft hand finished things up wonderfully. George Carlin blazed a trail with a few other rare talents (Lenny Bruce, Richard Pryor, and Bill Hicks are among the only to come to mind). We were fortunate to have had Carlin walking among us as long as he did. We are also fortunate to have this amazing posthumous work. Kudos to George Carlin, and to Tony Hendra, and to George’s daughter Kelly for all she does.

George Carlin was unique among comedians. Always working on new shows. He didn’t like using his old work unless it combined into a new joke. George Carlin might be one of the only people you can type in on Google and attach a topic next to his name and boom a video performance on that very subject. Listening to George as I grew up had a profound change on me. Probably in the worst, but that’s only because he told me the truth when everyone else wouldn’t. He had a way of making you feel like you are being educated as well as being entertained. Enjoy his Last Words.
