An interesting “unauthorized” biography, a more complex picture of Mickelson

May 17, 2022

This book has 19 chapters, and a total of about 240 pages, not including the Acknowledgments and Notes.

In the Introduction Shipnuck recalls an interaction with Mickelson that ended in Mickelson challenging him to a fight! He uses this example to highlight the difference between the charismatic persona that Mickelson often displays in public, and the fiery-tempered man he could be in private.

Shipnuck starts the book off with dozen of stories about Mickelson, told to him from other players and celebrities. These answers to the question “So what’s your best Phil Mickelson story?”, range from hilarious to touching; as they show the different sides of this complicated person.

The early chapters go over Mickelson’s family and early life, starting with his maternal grandfather. Shipnuck goes into lots of detail about Mickelson’s golf experiences as a child and teenager in southern California. In Chapter 5 he covers Mickelson meeting his wife Amy, and his mid 90s successes on the golf course; while Chapter 6 describes early interactions with Tiger Woods during these years.

Throughout the rest of the book Shipnuck describes significant events in Mickelson’s career and personal life; often including interesting bits of background information that the casual golf fan might not have been aware of. He includes the difficult time when Mickelson’s wife Amy was diagnosed with cancer, and he goes into detail about Mickelson’s apparent high-stakes gambling addiction.

This is a interesting biography of a talented and passionate man. The book highlights both Mickelson’s strengths and his weaknesses; but I think overall the portrayal is more positive than I had expected from an “unauthorized” biography. Mickelson comes across as a confident and determined golf pro that still has some major flaws, just like many other people do. The difference with Mickelson is that most of his life has been in the public eye, and many of his successes and failures have been on display for the world to see. Obviously I think that golf fans will probably enjoy this book more than others, but the writing style and amusing stories might be somewhat entertaining even for readers that are less familiar with Mickelson.
