Some very good points, but could have been more detailed.

This book goes into various societal factors that keep people poor and exploited in America. Redlining, predatory lending, poor access to good schools and jobs, bought off politicians etc.

My issue was some of the issues covered were too vague and some things were not covered at all. For example, union membership is down in this country and as a result wages are down and workplace fatalities and injuries have increased as well. But this wasn’t mentioned in the book even though it has a large part in why good paying jobs are no longer available to millions of people.

Also, they delve at times into identity politics a little too much. I understand minorities are more largely affected by poverty and lack of access to better housing and other essentials. But there were times it felt like they were trying to pander to the increasingly tribalistic mentality going on in America. Instead of trying to get everyone who’s not in the upper class to understand we’re all in the same boat they often had the tone of trying to pit women and minorities against men (or at least white men). The aforementioned decline in union membership and increase of injuries/fatalities largely effects male dominated professions, but that didn’t seem to be worth any focus to the authors. If they had more evenly covered how poverty is hurting all middle and lower middle class Americans in different ways, I would have given this a five-star rating.

If you want an introduction into why America’s working class is suffering I will recommend, but it still could have been broader and more detailed.
