AMY E. HERMAN is the founder and president of The Art of Perception, Inc., a New York–based organization that conducts professional development courses for leaders around the world, from Secret Service agents to prison wardens. An art historian and an attorney, Herman holds a BA in international affairs from Lafayette College, a JD from the National Law Center at George Washington University, and an MA in art history from Hunter College. The Self-Help/Art History Mash-Up Must Read

I’d say Fixed is for anyone who wants to learn practical and effective tools to help deal with issues and conflict, but it’s so much more than that. The author masterfully leads readers to change stale ways of thinking by looking at a wide range of art. It’s entertaining, witty and full of interesting stories about specific works of art — yet it’s packed with real problem-solving strategies and methods to help us understand differing viewpoints, and ourselves. An important and timely read!

Amy’s Perspective?

Visual Intelligence is one of my all-time favorite books and I have read Amy’s book 5-6 times. How disappointing that Amy leans in to adjust the reader’s “perspective” by gaslighting–by creating a false narrative–about the paintings. In her previous book, she led the reader to objectively describe specific items in a painting and to not overlook or ignore “the elephant in the room” such as an obese naked woman. As a nurse and a nurse educator, I learned [from Visual Intelligence] how to not miss important “mind, body, and spirit” details that affected the outcome for my patients, their families, and my orientees, i.e, new nurses and nursing students. Why are we changing the gender or the race of the artwork in her current book? How is this effective when it is not based in reality? Why do I feel like she is trying to direct my perspective to match her perspective in today’s volatile moment-by-moment changing political environment? I did highlight a great line in the book: “Problems are opportunities in that they highlight flaws in the system, weakness in our organization, and issues within ourselves that once identified, can be overcome, making us, our work, and our relationships stronger. In the words of Winston Churchill, never let a good crisis go to waste.” Because of my previous respect for Amy’s writing, I will continue to read the book (I’m on page 72) and hope to glean truths that I can apply to my work life and my personal life.
Perfect Follow-Up to Art of Perception

In Fixed, Amy Herman’s follow-up to The Art of Perception, she takes the reader on an even deeper dive into problem solving, by teaching them how to ask the right questions. Inquiry is the basis for Herman’s work, and it is terribly underrated in our society. If we don’t constantly question the world around us – including what we are told to see, and what we are told to ignore – aren’t we in danger of losing self-efficacy? The use of Gericault’s Raft of the Medusa painting as a connecting theme throughout the book is inspired. Digging into the tragedy portrayed by Gericault, reveals essential information not about not only the image, but also about the artist, the situation, the aftermath, and, most significantly, the society that enabled this horror to happen. Herman’s teachings are essential for anyone wanting to better understand the world in which we live, and how to live their best lives within it.

Problem solving is most certainly a lost art, and in “Fixed. How to Perfect the Fine Art of Problem-Solving” Amy Herman reflects problem solving in our high speed society through a completely original lens. This book helps the reader to use art in order to see themselves and the problems they face every day more clearly. In a world where everything cannot be “fixed,” kids today especially are not embracing uncertainty as “a cauldron of creativity.” Instead, they are paralyzed by uncertainty, so they lack resilience. This book is a must read for parents, high school students, college students, and anyone who wants to enhance their problem solving skills.

A page turning read, Fixed delights the reader with a variety of works of art while imparting valuable tools for breaking down and resolving complex challenges. A novel approach to an age old challenge, how do we solve problems, large and small?. Can we learn to see what we don’t see, ask what we don’t ask and think in new ways about the world around us? Amy Herman’s ingenious book encourages her readers to sharpen problem solving skills by observing art in new ways. A step by step guide to intentionally questioning the biases , blind spots, preconceptions, individual styles, preferences and social constructs we bring to the table as we face the challenges in our personal and professional lives and the ever changing issues in our shared world.
