Attributes of Provence Style PDF

An intimate tour of quintessential Provencal style, featuring chic homes and interior details inspired by this picturesque region. Provence Style PDF

Thirty years after the publication of Peter Mayle’s bestselling memoir A Year in Provence, the sun-drenched southern French region continues to excite home decorators with its combination of rustic charm, elegant details, and historical influences. Provence Style showcases the best of the region, with Shauna Varvel’s quintessential 18th-century Rhône valley farmhouse—Le Mas des Poiriers—as its centerpiece. Named for the working pear orchard on the grounds, the property was reimagined by noted local architect Alexandre Lafourcade, who transformed a rough structure into a luxurious expression of the Provençal aesthetic, referencing historical influences, rural traditions, and Parisian taste.
Set amid a garden of allées, arbors, and terraces designed by the architect’s mother, renowned landscape designer Dominique Lafourcade, this exemplar of Provençal style is the starting point for exploring the region’s characteristic interior details and exterior features. The book includes chapters on the public spaces of the home, from entrances to living rooms, the private realm of bedrooms and bathrooms, and outdoor areas including patios and kitchen gardens, transporting the reader on a captivating stylistic journey.

Not what I hoped for
July 24, 2021

As other reviewers have noted, if you are buying this book out of an interest in the author’s home – which is featured on the book’s cover – you will be disappointed. This home has been featured in numerous other magazines. I was hoping this book would examine the gorgeous home at a much more detailed level but it is barely more detailed than those aforementioned magazine spreads. The pictures of the home are similar (if not the same) as previous photos included in the above noted magazines. I could detect very few new, previously unpublished pictures of the home or grounds which was a let down. The rest of the book features numerous photos of homes previously and exhaustively published as well. The book’s content is absolutely lovely but regurgitation.

A bit of a disappointment.
June 25, 2021

Overall, this is a beautiful book. However, the focus was supposed to be the author’s house and garden. The house is beautifully designed, well worth a book of it’s own. Yet only a third of the book, the best part, well written and engaging, with gorgeous pictures, is devoted to the actual house, and most annoyingly, only one shot of the gardens, which are beautiful, as shown on magazines and Instagram, and conceived by a world class garden designer, Dominique Lafourcade. Not a word on the process, or detailed pictures. Instead, two thirds of the book are devoted to the “elements” of provencal design, with most of the pictures having appeared previously in older books on provencal design, alongside a dull exposition of said elements. Too bad, the book could have been extraordinary.

Save your money!! Very disappointing book. I had been waiting for it to be available and I even pre ordered it thinking it was a comprehensive book about the renovation with lots of before and afters of the entire home and surrounding buildings and grounds! It was 1/4 part a few photos and the rest was just photos of misc houses in and around Provence. It is not worth $50

Beautiful places…dull photographs
June 29, 2021

I was thrilled to receive the book, having lived in Avignon for several months many years ago. The vivid colors, the landscape and charming villages were unforgettable. Unfortunately, this book has, in my opinion, a problem with color reproduction: what should be beautiful colors are rendered dull and faded. Places, such as charming villages, are not identified. The book misses the mark by not photographing the cheerful, sunny, beautiful colors of the area. The places portrayed in the book seems deadly without the spirit and vitality of Provence. A disappointment. I gave 3 stars only because of the evident thought that went into putting the book together.

This may very well be the most beautiful coffee table book I own, and I have many beautiful ones. Every page is stunning, it takes you back to Provence and invites you to enjoy the beauty through the photos. Gorgeous interior design; absolute perfection. All I want is to visit Provence now.

I love beautiful books
One of the best books on Provence design.

A real pleasure, especially during the summertime, to look at this book. Not only interiors but exteriors and a large section on gardens. Enjoyable essays and photos on materials, water, fabrics, etc. Well written and with outstanding photos. The quality of book design and production is excellent. In other words, an appealing book whether you are a designer or admirer of the beauty of Provence.

Enjoying Provence, page by page

Ever since a trip to France , 20 years ago, I’ve looked forward to learning more about this country’s culture, history and language.
This book ,is perfect for one who loves tradition, and vintage styling. Provence Style is engaging and colorful , providing illustrations of the Provence style, in all its glory, almost enticing one to want to go to Provence , to visit the markets, and antique shops, up close.
It provides close ups & detailed photos of French homes, and garden designs to try.
Needless to say, I enjoyed this book.

Was für eine schöne Bastide
Reviewed in Germany on February 15, 2022

Merci

The book is charming and the first half is really lovely! The latter half feels a bit less lush. I am pleased to own it.
