Rocky “Perlmutter did it again. He’s way ahead of the pack (conventional medicine) with a new cutting-edge book to show us how to achieve better health by understanding something none of us even thought of before—the remarkable impact of uric acid is on our health and longevity. Who knew?
I’ve told this story to hundreds of people over the years, but if we haven’t met, indulge me. Perlmutter’s earlier book caused an immediate and sustainable change for my husband that was worth repeating the story many times. It was undeniable and remarkable.
After coming home from a three-day business trip, I found a new husband. He had read Perlmutter’s book and immediately bought and took the suggested supplements. After my trip, he came to the door to greet me a different person—more alive, happier, and a newfound curiosity to read, retain, and assimilate information. He hadn’t stopped reading all weekend! He was childlike in his passion for life—not that there was anything wrong before. He was a high-functioning executive. Who knew there was so much more available to the executive function of his brain just by applying Perlmutter’s ideas—and that it could happen so quickly.
Even though I’m forever grateful to Perlmutter for impacting my husband and, subsequently, my health, I have to say I wasn’t that excited to read Drop Acid. I thought it might be a regurgitation of one of Perlmutter’s previous books, as is often the case with many authors. Wrong again.
Drop Acid lays out evidence that many pervasive health conditions have uric acid as a root cause.
Alarmingly, he makes the case that many Americans have elevated uric acid levels that will increase the risk of developing life-threatening diseases and, for those already experiencing issues with cardiovascular disease, neurological disorders, diabetes, hypertension, insulin resistance and other health issues, by exacerbating those conditions.
Here are just a few of the health tips I’m planning on implementing immediately after reading this book:
1) Even more diligence to eliminate gluten and GMO from my diet
2) More plant-based food, including his list of acid-dropping fruits and vegetables
3) Eating only organic eggs
4) Adding far more extra virgin olive oil
5) No sugar or sugar replacements (more awareness of how much gets added to processed “food” products)
6) Zero fructose—case well made. And if I see a friend drinking a soda, they can count on me to aggressively throw it in the trash can. (That’s means I like you and want to keep you around.)
7) And, even more broccoli and cherries—especially broccoli sprouts
Covered in previous books but always welcome the reminders to stay away a list of foods from page 176 -181.
Unlike many “health” books that, when you finish reading them, it feels like you’re doing a 40-day fast because there is nothing left to eat, Perlmutter offers an extensive list of foods you can eat along with forty recipes to help lower your uric acid.
As important is the list of suggested foods that lower uric acid. Most are readily available and lend themselves to diets for busy people. I don’t know about you but I get in trouble when I’m hungry and running through an airport, and there is nothing around but unhealthy choices—giving the option to stay hungry or violate my health. Most of the suggested foods in Drop Acid lend themselves to being packed for a day trip. Also, with this list, there will always be a way to order food on the menu of most restaurants.
I haven’t tried any of the recipes yet because I just finished the book—but they look delicious AND easy for a mere mortal to make. It’s always disheartening to see healthy recipes in books that require exotic foods that are not accessible or take so much time that “the juice isn’t worth the squeeze.”
Bottom line…even if you’ve read all of Perlmutter’s other books and you think there is likely nothing new here, what you will find is a formula for longevity and health far beyond what is discussed in any other health books and blogs. Worth reading IF you want to live a long and healthy life.”
Turns out my Uric Acid levels were extremely high… so, I kept reading. Not only is Dr. Perlmutter’s book easy to understand and a pleasure to read, it’s also full of actionable steps.
I starting his LUV diet and adjusted my sleep schedule… I already feel the difference. My personal doctor is now monitoring my Uric Acid levels and even he’s surprised at just how much they’ve come down in such a short period of time. In fact, he’s bought a copy of the book and is now recommending it to patients.
