Peter B. Seel, Ph.D., is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Journalism and Media Communication at Colorado State University in the United States. Some of the chapters are a little bit dry (to be expected of any textbook, I think), but overall the book provides an extremely good history of the beginning of the internet and how it has evolved over the years. I was very interested in the chapters explaining communication and technology throughout the world.

It’s not too long of a book either, coming in at under 300 pages (and the font is probably size 12.. so it’s not micro). There are even pictures which are quite interesting (in black and white of course)! Each chapter is also very well documented, so you can easily continue research on any of the sources the author used if you’re still curious.

I found Digital universe to be a very insightful book. I appreciated the way that it gave a historic perspective of the internet and other technologies that are in wide use today. I also think that the topics relating to the legal and sociopolitical impact of social media are of most importance today as there are laws being written that are affecting these very topics today. I appreciated the current events being incorporated into the content which brought its level of relevance to the top. It was also an easy read for the most part, which made it even more enjoyable. Lastly, I liked how the author seemed to maintain a neutral voice for the most part which I liked.

Dr. Seel’s Digital Universe did a great job of bringing together technology’s history with today’s technology. I really enjoyed reading this textbook because I felt it won’t overwhelm people with non-technical backgrounds, but still gives enough to where you can understand the history of the Internet and technology – ARPANET, etc. – the origins of the personal computer and the people who made these technologies and a lot more today possible. The book goes through the topics in a chronological, story-telling approach, and is very objective and fair. If you are already well-versed in computers or IT, you’d probably still pick up quite a few new facts.
