Poorly written
January 27, 2019

There are numerous errors, especially when stating that an answer is correct or incorrect. Example:

Page 258: Question is treatment of variant angina:
” Long acting nitrates are initially effective in preventing attacks of variant angina”. They state “Option D is
incorrect” but Option D is Isosorbide mononitrate
“CCBs are very effective in preventing attacks of variant angina”. They state “Options A and B are incorrect”.
Option A is Nifedipine and Option B in Amiodipine
“Statin therapy is indicated”. They state “Option C is incorrect”. Option C is Atorvastatin.

Page 270. The question regards ACC guidelines for thrombolytics and asks which are true EXCEPT.
The correct answer is A but then they say “The remainder of the statements provided are correct
(options B through E are incorrect)”.

I could give many more examples but suffice to say the book is full of them. It is hard to believe such sloppy editing. It doesn’t prevent one from learning but if you weren’t sure of your answer to begin with it would be very confusing. I would save my money for something better.

Knowing and Passing Academic the Clinical Cardiology Board
December 9, 2018

Cardiology boards today really are about whether you are a clinical cardiologist, not a noninvasive cardiologist. Hurst’s book is about how not to write a book of generalities. A Companion Guide to Hurst’s The Heart prepares you to pass the CV board. Never mind about graphics. Clinical Cardiology is not a discipline of preparing you for the boards. It is about how to be an encyclopedic clinical cardiologist! Since it is a 2019 book, this is what can I say: Know your ACC/AHA guidelines well. The Book? Lets take pharmacology: nitrates in HPpEF, oral anticoagulants versus antiplatelets, Atorvastatin 80, Sotalol and Amio, antidiabetics versus Metformin etc. Hurst’s a great treatise. Best review it before you sit down in the board exam.
