Six murders. One hundred pages. Millions of possible combinations… but only one is correct. Can you solve Torquemada’s murder mystery?Cain’s Jawbone By Edward Powys Mathers PDF

In 1934, the Observer’s cryptic crossword compiler, Edward Powys Mathers (aka Torquemada), released a novel that was simultaneously a murder mystery and the most fiendishly difficult literary puzzle ever written.

The pages have been printed in an entirely haphazard order, but it is possible – through logic and intelligent reading – to sort the pages into the only correct order, revealing six murder victims and their respective murderers.

Only three puzzlers have ever solved the mystery of Cain’s Jawbone: do you have what it takes to join their ranks?

Please note: this puzzle is extremely difficult and not for the faint-hearted.

The Authors

Cains Jawbone By Edward Powys Mathers PDF

Edward Powys Mathers (28 August 1892 – 3 February 1939) was an English translator and poet, and also a pioneer of compiling advanced cryptic crosswords. Powys Mathers was born in Forest Hill, London, the son of Edward Peter Mathers, newspaper proprietor. He was educated at Loretto School and Trinity College, Oxford.

He translated J. C. Mardrus’s French version of One Thousand Nights and One Night. His English version of Mardrus appeared in 1923, and is known as Mardrus/Mathers. He also translated The Garden of Bright Waters: One Hundred and Twenty Asiatic Love Poems (1920); and the Kashmiri poet Bilhana in Bilhana: Black Marigolds (1919), a free interpretation in the tradition of Edward FitzGerald, quoted at length in John Steinbeck’s novel Cannery Row. These are not scholarly works, and are in some cases based on intermediate versions in European languages. Some of his translations were set to music by Aaron Copland.

He was also a composer of cryptic crosswords for The Observer under the pseudonym “Torquemada” from 1926 until his death. He was the author of Crosswords for Riper Years (1925) and The Torquemada Puzzle Book (1934). Under this pseudonym, he reviewed detective stories from 1934 to 1939.

In 1919 he married Rosamond Crowdy (5 July 1886–7 June 1965), third daughter of Colonel H. Crowdy, RE.

He died in his sleep at his home in Hampstead.

Interesting! But not loose leaf papers as image showed

Interesting and can’t wait to really get into it, but the image of the product when I bought it was loose leaf papers, which would be a lot easier to handle than a bound book.

Looks like fun, but might end in tears

There have only been 3 people to solve this mystery puzzle book. It’s 100 pages long and out of order. It looks like fun, but 3 people? I’m game. Also, the book sellers Books etc in Aldershot, England had this book to me faster than I though as I live in California, USA. Thank you and awesome packaging. It arrived in mint condition.

 More than I can chew…

I love the concept and the idea of this long-standing nearly impossible to solve mystery. I purchased three copies or you one in the family is reading it right now comparing notes and trying our best to make sense of it once you get past the old school European language and dialogue it’s a very interesting literary obstacle.

Great to stump Grandpa and Friends!

May 16, 2018

My father likes to come over and “torture” his grandkids with riddles. One of his favorites “What two coins makes 55 cents and one is not a nickle”……The kids get frustrated and angry with him when he finally gives in and tells them it’s a 50 cent piece and a nickle! They argue that one isn’t a nickle and he chuckles and says exactly “ONE isn’t a nickle” He did this to me growing up and now carries the tradition on with them. Well, I decided to help them out and arm them with some riddles of their own for when their Paw Paw shows up. I have a 9 yr old and a 16 yr old and they both loved this book. It gave them tons of riddles that were difficult enough to frustrate an old riddle pro! They had a great time stumping their grandfather. The riddles range in difficulty. But they are not baby riddles. So adults would enjoy this book too. I think this book would be great to use at a party as well with adults. Test your friends logical skills and see how many you can get! Great little book, totally worth every penny!

Great entertainment for my 7 and 9 years old

February 20, 2019

Got this book for my 4th and 2nd grader. So far we did Half of the 300 riddles and they love it. This is a great exercise in thinking outside of the box. Some of the riddles are a little long but most of them are just one short sentence that teaches the kids to paying attention to the question and it’s wording. This is a skill that for sure will be useful at school.
I am really happy with the purchase.

 A complete wast of money!

August 2, 2018

Neither myself or the very smart 11 year old I gave it too could understand the questions, much less answer them. Some random guy self-published a list of word problems, with no context or help given to help solve them. A complete waste of money!

No hyperlinks make Kindle version cumbersome

July 21, 2018

I am reviewing the Kindle edition specifically. Content-wise, I’m happy with the purchase, but the formatting makes this quite cumbersome to use.

There are no hyperlinks in the text connecting the riddles in the front of the book to their answers at the back of the book, so every single time you want an answer to a riddle you will have to go to the back of the book and manually find the corresponding riddle number to find the answer. Even if you bookmark the page where the answers begin, it is STILL cumbersome, as only 8-14 answers appear per page (depending on landscape or portrait mode). There are 300 riddles total.

Every other riddle book I’ve purchased on Kindle had hyperlinks connecting the riddles to their answers. I’m really confused why they wouldn’t add this feature, honestly it just seems lazy.
